Hey guys I am new here. Just bought a 2001 f-250 ext. cab 7.3L powerstroke 4x4 with 86k miles on it. As soon as I figure out how to post pics i'll get some up. Being new to the diesel world I had a question. What is the common maintenance that you have to do on these diesels besides oil changes and brakes. Right now the truck runs amazing and I want to keep it that way so any help would be great.
My other question has to do with the steering. Driving it home it seemed really wierd. Just before the wheels turn all the way it gets really stiff (like when there is one more 360 left in the steering wheel it gets tough) is that normal or no? Also when going straight and doing the small back and fourth corrections that you make on trucks, when I made a correction to the left and just barley turned the wheel it would jump left and I would have to oversteer to the right. Any ideas or is that the nature of the beast.
Thanks for the help and sorry for the first long post.
http://www.7point3.com/mods.aspx is the linnk that will take you to an excellent basic page that you will want to put in your favorites for future reference.
Lots of great info here, and plenty of great folks to help you save lots of money on doing things right.
Do you have a lift, how big are the tires? If no lift and tires are under 35" then I would guess that your steering damper is bent. This happened to me one day while hunting and it made it difficult to steer when the part of the piston rod that was bent would get close to the resevoir cylinder.
HTH
OBTW congrats on the new truck ... stick around here and you'll definately get PMS (powerstroke mod syndrome) a very costly and highly addictive disease that comes from these forums ......PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION, we are not liable for bankruptcies, divorces, pissed off girlfriends,or busted knuckles.
well luckily for me I am only 18 so i am not married and the girlfriend likes the truck so no problem there lol. Bankruptcy I already have since I just dropped 21k on a truck lol.
No it is not lifted but i'll look at the stabilizer tomorrow when it is light out and not 5 degreese. It only does it going to the right to so that could be it.
Thanks for the welcome so far guys. I really like the truck. It wasn't hard to fall in love with it since my last truck was a 1996 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9L V8 junker. It was a 4x4 auto as well and was going on it's 3rd trans. and 2nd transfercase so I said later to that and got the PSD. I pull a 18 foot MX race trailer so the truck is a little over kill but it's nice having it if I need it and who doen't like that diesel noise...(well my neighbors don't at 6:00 in the morning but oh well).
MX256 - Hello & welcome to the best spot on U'r 'puter. Much friendly advice & info is right here - just find the right thread ( there's a bunch of 'em ).
With a little TLC these trucks will just about run forever. In addition to the Oil and filters ya need the add Coolant test strips @ 10K and tranny fluid change @ 30K. If you tow heavy regular the front and rear diffs could use a change at 30K also I never tow heavy and do mine at 60K.
Make sure to use a good diesel rated oil (Delo or Rotella are good ones) in the 5W40 or 15W40 weight. The injectors are fired by engine oil pressurized up to 3200psi in the high pressure oil system and cheap oils can foam and cause problems. Read through all the links on that page F250-Newbie gave you and you'll be ready for a long lasting truck.
yeah I was reading through those. I also noticed the post on changing to tow mirriors I am wanting to do the same but horrible at wiring but all for saving money and doing it on my own. I have power but not heated or signaled and with it being an 01 I can bet money it has the old style connecter. Oh well right now I am enjoying it. It just snowed here so now it's time to test the 4x4.
YO MX, It may sound too simple, but my steering stiffened up and I thought it was a power steering prob, but it ended up being the fact that, what I'll call the king pins, had never been greased. I was getting all of my oil changes done by a bp, and they couldn't get their grease gun on the fittings due to the u joints near the front hub. so they just said screw it. I got a grease gun fitting that slides on from the side, lubed er up and has been fine ever since. Worth a try anyway.
Congrats on the New Ford Diesel. I will give you one word of warning though about hanging out on this forum, It is going to cost you so much money. So many mods and so little money. Great people here though. Plan on going through and spending some time reading the old forum topics because there is great information in here. Enjoy
new member too the PSD club, welcome.
the best thing about us, some one is normaly here 24 hrs a day. i notice that i seem to be the last one off here due to time zones and i really just have nothing else to do at 9 oclock here its 1 am on the east coast.
so theres usualy someone on here. congrats on the new ride.
thanks guys. I am sure I will have a lot of questions. 4x4 in this is awesome simply because of the fact it works and it is a **** not a lever...I mean my last truck had a sticker that said 4x4 and a lever for it but once it came down to grabbing that lever it decided not to be a 4x4 but rather a 4x2 with a cool clunking noise.
