This last weekend I replaced 7 out of 8 plugs on my Navigator (#8 was a bear so didn't get replaced). I replaced them with Motorcraft Iridium/platinum plugs. Put anti-sieze on the plugs and Dielectric grease in the plug boots. Gapped them at .055. Now the thing runs a little different than it used to...a little worse.
It takes longer to start now when its cold. It used to start after perhaps, 1 turn of the engine. It now takes 3 or so turns to start. I've also noticed a strong gas smell from the exhaust.
It seems to run just fine on the road and my mileage has improved some on the highway with the addition of the new air and fuel filter as well. I just don't know what is going on with my truck.
No check engine light either. If there is anything else I left out and you need to know to diagnose further, ask away.
If you're getting a gas smell you may have an injector leaking at the "O" Ring. Yes both back plugs are a pain to get too. But it should have gotten changed. That may still be some of you're problem.
I'm smelling gas from the exhaust, not the engine compartment and all the plugs I removed were within specs, so I really don't think it is an issue with the old plug left in there. The 32 valve engines in these Navigators are quite a bit different from the 16 valve engines in the Expeditions. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do anything with the plugs for another month or so. All the tools (and the 8th plug) I need to work on my truck were left at my father-inlaw's cabin where I did the work.
I wish I would have brought a camera to take pictures.
After replying to the post above, I went to start the truck. Still cold as ever at 10 degrees, but this time it started right up like it normally would and there was no gas smell from the exhaust. I did have the battery disconnected for about 6 hours, I wonder if it had to do with the computer relearning and all that stuff! I guess I'll know more tomorrow morning when I start it again.
The vacuume lines are all in good condition, but I may have to check if any didn't get hooked back up or accidentally disconnected.
Well, it continues to have the same problems. I have listened and listened and can't hear a vacuum leak. The only air sound I hear is coming from the intake. Well, that and the fan (wish it was electric).
