Hey guys, i'm getting ready to commission into the air force (i'm in rotc in college, i graduate this may) and the air force is sending me to kansas. Right now i live in the state of washington. I drive a cherryed 77 f-150, but i need to make that long drive and i need to take the 77 with me so i bought a 2005 250 with a powerstroke in it. i'm told that these engines need to be driven lots and not just started up and shut off. so i guess i'm asking you guys if i made a good or bad decision here. i work on cars on the side, and i end up towing lots of them on the trailer, and i thought it would be nice to do this with a 3/4 ton as opposed to half. ( i should mention i work on gas engines, not diesel) so, did i do the right thing here? or did i buy the wrong truck?
First off, congratulations on your coming graduation! I'm in the same boat, but I'll be going active duty in the Navy this May. I also bought an '05 Powerstroke about 18 months ago and I've already put 33k miles on it. I drive a Civic to school everyday so I only drive my truck on the weekends for roadtrips and for towing. I must say that it's been everything I was hoping for. I haven't had any problems with it even though I let it sit 5 days at a time. I do run Rotella synthetic oil in it just for a little added protection since it sits so long. I just did a 1500 mile roadtrip this last weekend and it performed great. I'd say just be responsible and change the oil every 5k miles and follow all other maintenance service at the recommended intervals using the appropriate filters and you'll be fine. Enjoy the truck and good luck in the Air Force.
Thanks. I figured i'd do kinda the same thing you're doing, i'll drive my 77 back and forth to class, and drive the other one on the weekends and what not. Its pretty cool though, lots of power. Come to think of it, i've never owned anything this nice, haha.
