Engine coolant temp sensor on my 4.0L is mounted just below the throttle body next to the thermostat. However, the temp sending unit (for the gauge in the instrument cluster) is nearby also. I couldn't say for your 3.0L engine. The ECT has two wires, and the sending unit for the gauge only has one. I don't think the EEC-IV computer has the capability of diagnosing all DEGRADED sensors or circuits, but it will diagnose a FAILED sensor or circuit.
The ECT can be compared to the choke also. It reports to the EEC the temperature of the engine, so the EEC can make decisions on timing and fuel mixture. As you've seen, there's several possibilities for your hesitation. It's just a process of elimination.
Under hood, center, front engine area, above water
outlet, mounted in intake manifold
Thats what autozone.com says your ect sensor is. go to autozone.com website and under there repair info they tell what the ect ohms and volts should be at. Just check yours, thats what I did.
i got a code 116 from my scanner so i bought a new coolant sensor for my 1994 3.0
i cant seem to find the sensor under the hood. i thought i had found it but the connector on what i thought it was round and the new wells opne i bought is more square/rectangular.
even at autozone.com, the worded instructions dont seem to help, and my haynes manual doesnt help either.
is the front of the engine the cap and rotor end or the serpentine belt end?
The closest section to the front bumper. I have a 2.3l ranger so im not sure on the 3.0 but mine is on the coolant hose going to the heater core. Hope that helps

If it is a little plug looking thing and has 2 wires coming out of it and its installed in a water outlet, then its the coolant temp sensor.
Just FYI, i bougt one for my 94 ranger with the 4.0 and got home, removed the old coolant temp sensor, and they were different, the ends were, one was square, the other was ciruclar. I had to go back and get one from a 93 ranger. This could be your problem too.
ya I had the same problem with my 94 2.3l ranger. One brand was the wrong kind but the other brand was the right one. I forgot the brand names though sorry.
ok, took the wells one i had from autozone for $17.99 to advance and looked at the GP sorenson one they had and the GP one was correct, they gave me the GP one for $17.99 and i took the wells one back to autozone.
installed it and time will tell if the hesitation problem is gone(i already think it is).
