I have been trying to describe the noise that I am hearing in my '06 PSD but could never describe it untill talking to a fellow FTE member with the same noise via private message. We agree that it sounds like a small ghost is howling or moaning in the engine compartment. It varies with RPM and is most noticeable when backing off the go pedal. There are no other problems with the engine, but we are curious if any one else has noticed this noise, and if it is a normal 6.0 noise. Thanks, John
Hey guys I'm the other 6.0 owner with the same problem John has, we have been pm'ing so we could try to describe the noise and its not the turbo fart, I know what that sound like, and I also have the straight pipe and I can still hear it! Any info would be greatly appreciated.
My truck does the same thing. Usually when I let off the throttle at the top of a hill. It sounds like a the turbo winding down rapidly with something blowing in the veins to make it louder than normal. Truck runs great so I won't take it in. I think it's normal. Sounds cool to me.
its like a tornado warning siren about 10 miles away to me barley noticable but i like it
or one of those ghosts that you hang in the doorway and when you clap it starts shakin and gooling
It's a low pitch sound and I can't speak for John but mine does it more when the engine is cold, once it gets to normal temp. you can still hear it but barely!
It seams like this is becoming a common sound in the 6.0. If it is a high pitch noise sounding like it is coming from around the stearing wheel area, it is the degas bottle cap venting. I know this sounds like crap. There is another web site I belong to that has a 10 page write up on this, I would give you the address but I would probably get this post deleted. Anyways, I have had this same sound, I checked the EGR gasket/manifold connection, turbo vanes for play, boost tubes, vacuum lines, turbo mount. I thought the entire time that it was the cap, but thought it was impossible. Well $6.00 later and a new cap the sound is gone. Trust me, before you rip everything apart or have your dealer try and find the sound, go spend 6 bucks and see if this corrects your problem.
Oh, and it will do it more below 40F and even more with a tuner on. I also had an oil analisis done, and there was 0 coolant in the oil, so I know it is not a head gasket problem like everyone blames every problem on.
i have had a couple of right side up pipes that would make this noise. there is a flex joint on the right up pipe that exhaust will leak through and give you this noise.
