Voltage Regulator

I just bought a new alternator from napa and got the voltage regulator with it (external regulator) and they said they didn't carry the wires to hook up the regulator, will the wires off of a 1979 ford f-150 go onto the new regulator that i bought the regulator and alternator is for a 1983 ford f150
