Can anyone tell me what the whooshing noise is that comes out my exhaust while it is warming up. It also has some blueish color exhaust puffs while it does this. If I drive it before its warmed up I can actually feel it slow the engine everytime it whooshes. Its not a constant whoosh but a repetative one. It really makes the exhaust tone sound like a very hollow tube sound.?????????????
That is your backpressure control valve. It is doing what it was designed to do. The truck monitors temperatures. A diesel, because it is moving sooo much air through it, typically does not warm up very well at idle. The valve closes off the exhaust somewhat to load up the engine, thus building heat to warm it up. With this valve closed, it won't pull the hat off your head....kinda like stuffing a potato in your exhaust. I don't know why you have blue smoke with it, as that is not typical. Everything else sounds OK.
That is good to hear. In my head I was thinkinking the turbo bearings were going bad and the turbo didnt want to spin very well and the wastegate was opening and relieving pressure....
How do you know when the turbo should be rebuilt before it it completely destroyed?
Also my truck runs alot better when its warm...should I put cardboard up in the grill on these 5 degree mornings. I see alot of big semis covering there radiators. Thanks Robert
You can take off the intake tube to the turbo and inspect the wheel. The edges should be sharp and have no damage. Reach in and check for play (obviously while not running). There should be none, either side to side or front to back, but it should spin very easily.
Putting cardboard up to shield part of the radiator is fine. You can also purchase a 203* thermostat which will keep it warmer as well.
