I've been hearing a strange noise in my '88 F150 for the past few weeks. it's hard to describe, but here it goes... it's on the driver's side, but can't tell if it's inside the cab, or just on the other side of the fire wall... but it seems to be coming from below, in the pedal area. the noise does not sound like a mechanical problem. the best way I can descibe it is it sounds like a piece of paper blowing in the wind. it usually only happens at speeds above 40mph, but one in a while at slower speeds. it sounds like a piece of paper taped to the hood at 70mph. it seems to happen more when I'm on the gas. I did a thorough visual inspection under the truck, behind the fire wall, and inside the cab. I didn't see anything unusual. I was hoping to find a piece of trash stuck under there... but nothing.
Any ideas? I've never heard anything like it... and it's getting on my nerves!
Also, there are no noticable changes in the truck's performance... just the noise.
It could be an exhaust leak. They can make a variety of odd noises you would never think it would make. I've heard puffing, ticking, whistling and droning sounds due to cracked manifolds and leaky gaskets.
If it's a ticking sound it could also be your fuel injectors. Especially speed density where the injectors are bank firing.
