Yesterday someone hit my driver side power mirror on my 2006 F250. CA insurance will not pay (less my $1000. deductable) unless the car that hit it is identified.
The plastic frame, arms and wide angle mirror are all OK, the mirror with the pivot points and defroster and side lens are broken. The side lens led blinker still works.
I will call a dealer, but I wonder if I could fix it myself? Any tips?
I am going to start pulling my mirrors in when parked on busy streets.
Just got off the phone with Ford. If any of the 6 little plastic pivot parts are damaged or lost, you have to replace the entire mirror assembly, arms and mount. $282 plus tax. One of my tabs is broken. My insurance company said they just had an in-house seminar that discussed these mirrors. I'll take it and report back.
If your insurance won't pay on your comp. I'd be changing ins.co's. All you need is a police report and they gotta pay. If they refuse, a letter to your states Insurance Commissioner will do the trick!
I was told by USAA this is a policy specific to California for all insurance companies. USAA told me that filing a police report without identifying the vehicle that hit me will not do any good. An official adjuster is suppose to call me today. I will of course continue the discussion.
What coverages do you have, collision, uninsured motorist property damage??? Doesn't sound like it matters anyway though, aren't the damages below your deductible? They wouldn't pay anyway, would they?
This isn't a collision claim...it's a comprehesive claim. Hit and run...how in hell is ANYONE going to id a hit and run? Again...contact state insurance commissioner if they don't pay.
This same thing just happened to my friends '04 and I was suprised at how few of them we could find on car-part.com We couldn't find any in North Carolina. All the ones that I saw on ebay are the older style like mine, without the signal and not heated. Anyone know of a source for aftermarket mirrors?

If you don't mind, I'm am going to get some mileage out of your post, when I talk to the adjuster tomorrow. If it works, I'll buy you a beer if you are ever in San Francisco.
So far all I know is that USAA has told me that this is a california specific exception to hit and run. But as mentioned above, if it is subject to a deductable then its a mute point (I should know this...)
Collision means any collision, including hit and run. A collision is when two things "collide".
A comprehensive loss is typically an animal impact, vandalism, a tree falling on your vehicle.
If a vehicle struck your vehicle, it is not a comprehensive loss, it is a collision loss.
In some states there is an additional coverage, uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) that is "additional" (meaning you have to buy it on top of collision) that allows for a lower deductible if the driver of the other vehicle is uninsured, or as in this case, not identifiable. However, sometimes, it only applies if there is a witness to confirm your vehicle was "hit and run" by a "phantom vehicle"; otherwise, the higher collision deductible applies. If there is no independent verification of hit and run (some companies also allow for the filing of a police report for hit and run to count as the "witness") there is no uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD).
There also may be exclusions to your policy that apply.
Please keep us posted, because I don't live in California and it would be interesting to me to see how things are handled there. Also, all insurance companies are different, and I've only worked for two out of the top four auto insurers, so I'm only going by what I know of those companies, USAA or California may handle things slightly different. In my state the dept of insurance will provide information to consumers on how insurance claims need to be handled, you might check with the Dept of Corporations or Dept of Insurance if your adjuster can't explain things to you.
BTW, I'll be in Sonoma in May if you're giving away free beer.
Since I don't know if it was, in fact, hit and run, since I did not see it. Maybe it was vandalism (yeah, thats the ticket) , a urban yeti, or a falling tree, in which case you may be in the running for the free beer, as my inlaws live in the Sonoma town proper.

Well, seeing as I live in Oregon, I'm pretty familiar with Yeti/Bigfoot. I'd invite him for the free beer, but I don't think you can afford his thirst
Just give me your parents address and when I'm down there for the motorcycle races in May I'll just swing by and tell them you said it was ok BTW, I'm a Guinness drinker!!!
There are some complications, the inlaws are tea totalers My formidable years were growing up in Southern Oregon, I have owned a Norton, Guzzi, Harley, Yamaha and Honda, and a I have a hanker'n for Guinness. If Sasquacht, can add any good insurance advice, I will buy both of you a beer at the Infineon Guinness Kiosk. Disclaimer: Both Sasquei and Guinni show up.
