PCM problems

I took my truck to the dealer the other day actually for a tire service, but the check engine had come on a couple of days earlier and wouldn't go off. I asked them to check it while they had it in the back. They did and it showed a lean code for the engine and the truck had all of the syptoms of the TSB for that code. The problem is that when the hooked up to reprogram the PCM the first question it asked to start the reprograming it went blank and has not come back since. They have tried numerous options and the ford hot line has tried but nothing seems to work. Just wondering has anyone else had this happen or heard of this happening? I'm now at 114,000 miles and my first real problem.

Is this a dealer service department that has a lot of 05 and up truck business

Does your truck still start and run? If so find a better dealer service department.

I suspect if they have the correct code reader programer that their cables or device died

Never heard of a PCM spontaneously dying by just plugging in a diagnostic tool

Ask the dealer if they hook up another '05+ SD...that the system works? If it does work on other SD's, then I am afraid your PCM is dead.

Good luck...

The truck doesn't run and it didn't die as soon as they plugged it in. Once they started the reprogramming and it ask you questions to start the procedure is when it died and the programmer works fine on other trucks. The Ford rep has been contacted by the dealer and checking into why this has happened when they followed the recommended correction for the tsb that ford had given out.

Sounds like the re-flash didn't complete and the PCM is left with half (or more) of it's memory blank... result? dead PCM...

I'd tell them point-blank: "It ran when it came in, it's gonna run when it comes out, and you're going to pay for whatever you broke" ... PERIOD.

This happens all the time with computer, routers, anything that can be "reflashed"... the re-flash can fail and leave you with a dead unit. Not often, but it does happen.

The shop could have had a power fluctuation that caused it.

If they don't have a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply w/battery backup) on the equipment, it's very possible the power was flaky and caused the equipment to stop flashing.

I'd use that "you DO have a UPS don't you?" line on them if they give you a problem.
