cigarette lighter socket removal

does anyone know how to pull out the cig lighter socket from the panel?
I tried a reasonable amount of force but am afraid to break something.

Arrow Well . . .

Are you talking about the power point panel on the upper right side of the dash or the cigar lighter on the lower center of the dash?

The whole panel on mine comes out, '06 KR for the power point. There are four snap clips and the easiest way is to pop the dash out and then pop the power point panel.

As far as the cigar lighter I haven't had to look at that section of the dash but they used to be screwed in place by design.

Lonewolf,
How much empty space is behind that power point panel? I'd like to tie a multi-port outlet behind it for "permanent" connections for things like my iPAQ+GPS, XM radio, etc. It looks like a big panel for just one outlet.

Usually, cigarette lighters have a screw on backshell. This looks kind of like a sleeve that fits over the lighter plug in back and screws in place and covers the plug completely.

To remove it you will need to get your hands behind the lighter and unscrew the shell. Usually right hand thread. Normally it is hand tight. Toughest part is getting your hand back there. Maybe the panel it is mounted on will snap out, this will make it easier but I don't know if it does come out on your model.

Most of the ones I have seen have a plug on the back of the socket for the wire to plug into, so be sure to remove that first if you are using any metal tools to remove it. You don't want to short the lighter socket.

Good luck,

Jim Henderson

There is quiet a bit in there. It is meant for the air bag on/off keyed switch, so since you don't have that in CC once you pop it out you should have plenty of room for what you are trying to do. It is a good 3" deep as I reacll if not more in a place or two.

eysham, if you remove the "Panty Hook" you should be able to unscrew the cigar lighter and get the job done. jim handerson discribed the mounting/screwing in correctly. Just reach in and unscrew.

My powerpoint plug is loose. The entire black panel.

Any idea how to get back there?

Wink Try this . . .

Once you have waded through the panties, pop off the dash and look into that space. You can start on the drivers side and work your way around the top to the passengers side. Good Luck.

so, after the thread was highjacked, I never saw an answer to the initial question. I have a 2005 SD....how do I remove the lighter socket? A special T-shaped tool? Push, and twist from inside the dash? I removed the panty hook panel, to gain access to the back of the socket, and have pushed on the socket with a great deal of force, with no luck. How does it come out? Push, and twist? Does socket and black plastic bezel come out together, initially, and then disassemble afterwards?
