The 351-M 77-78 had timing set @6* btdc but in 79 the timing was to be set @ 14* btdc . I've delt with both engine years and I always had better luck running mine @ 14* btdc. Runs very nice. with curb idle set to 650 rpm.

The 77 351M automatic was also 14*BTDC

see calibration 7-72-R11

at page I linked to above

that's why I asked which transmission he had.

How much total advance should we be running? starting @ 14btdc and adding 24* centrifugal then 8* vacuum adds up to way more than the 38* total adv. how does it work out to get the right total adv?

BTW my new vacuum adv is adding way too much adv so i disconnected it, would like to be able to understand the way it's supposed to work to hook it up right ie possibly adding vacuum restrictors in line with ported or manifold vacuum source

Ported vacuum is a start.

Weak distributor springs will cause too much advance.
