Question I'm New

Hello all.

Just picked up, 1991, F250, 351, 2X4. I was told she had a blown head gasket.
bought a used 351 out of 1994 econo van.... intake had to switched and some other stuff. The guys busted my radiator and denied it... that set me back $50. They got everything together and called me over to hear it run....
My cousin told me to let it run 10-15 mins and if the was anything wrong it'd show up. Sure enough, the engine rpms shoot way up over 2K. the mechanic had me shut it down and he adjusted the timing, we turned it over again and rpms never surged up again. But when I gave her some gas she wouldn't respond like before. I was tired of these guys... I wanted to get my truck and go.
Oh! end up replacing the radiator with a thicker core but there was no coolant hose inlet fitting for the hose running from the throttle body. My cousin told me to place a T-fitting in the one of the heater hoses and hook up the hose coming off of the throttle body. Drove her home about 5 miles max 45 mph and below.
Check engine light came on 300 yards from the house. I made it in ok.
Notice a water leak, fixed it. Took her out for gas and around the block. when she got warm Rmps were going up and she wouldn't catch second gear.... I finally gave her some gas and she caught second gear. She's back out front and I'm wondering what next. I'm afraid to move her any distance, she's unstable.

My thoughts on what to do next... pls give me your input.
My wife is all over me about this one.... got to get her running to take the heat off!
#1. set ignition timing correctly.
#2. What should I correct if rpms go wacky again?
#3. What about my tranny? Is she shot or is it the timing throwing it off?

I need to fix this myself. I plan on doing as much as I possibly can to repair and maintain this truck myself.

Thanks

boonie

Hello and Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts!

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. You will need to post your questions in the tech forums since this one is used for introductions. Click on the Forums tab at the upper left and look over the listing. I suggest this forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum28/

There are also engines forums that may have more help for you. Give everything a close look and feel free to ask your questions in any of those forums.

Good luck and enjoy the site!

George,

What is my next move... Is it were the major problem - what would that be?
Tell about the simple fix...

Should I post my problem to the correct forum and go from there?
I plan to go at it hard this weekend.

Thanks for the welcome

All,

It turned out to be... IAC, TPS.... replaced them both. Now she idles 1800 rpms and she doesn't fly off the handle at idle and run up.... 3500 rpms "uncontrolable"

Thanks... we fixed fixed it!!! But there is more to do...
