New engine

Hi guys. Been lurking here for a couple months now. My 99 F350 engine gave it up on me this weekend. Took it to Ford and it blew both head gaskets, and both heads are trashed. According to them the one head gasket had been bad for a while, slowly leaking anti-freeze. So I've decided to replace the whole engine, just for peace of mind. Price wise I think I"m better off with the warranty and not having to wonder if the anti-freeze has done any damage to the lower end.

What I"m wondering is if the new crate engine will be the updated one as in the 2001 model or will it be the 1999 model, does anyone know?

I did ask about the heads, and they said they would be the updated version. Is that what makes the higher HP?

There are a few folks here who have done exactly what you plan and they had to get the replacement motor as a 99 version

But I seriously suspect that there are zero true 99 versions in the re-manufacturing lines... The smallish differences are very subtle and the HP differance from 295 to 310 is not great enough to be concerned with...

Your power train and current computers would see a true 2001-2004 motor as just a motor and not magically change to give the extra 15 HP. I think the effort and costs to try and adapt all the changes are not really worth the extra 15 Hp

What I am saying is you already know they most likely will have the one weak link fixed... the funky heads from 99 are no longer used in any version...

That said, the only other significant change mechanically is the Intake air box and I am convinced that the heads and air box are a very small part of where FoMoCo found the 15 extra ponies...I think most of it was programing

Bottom line, if I were you, is to just get a good reliable rebuild with warranty and understand that once broken in, she will probably be much more powerful then the old, abused, and tired motor she replaces...

If time is not an issue I agree with Fred. A quality rebuild is the way to go. If you need the truck up and running quickly then the crate motor is the best bet.

The only thing about the Ford crate engine is you can get it warranteed at any dealer in the US. I think.

Fred, I've heard of a few people adding exhaust, tuner, whatever to a '99 and then buying a brand-new 2000-up and saying "wow, what a difference". Which means programming wasn't that much of an influrence on that 15HP.

If the head change didn't yield much, why would they go through engineering a new part just for the V10? The difference between non-PI and PI heads on the V8 modulars is well known, however the difference can be made up with a good porting job

Which might be an option - get the motor rebuilt and have the machinist port the heads - you'll get enough of a bump of high RPM torque to get the extra 15 HP.

But you're probably right about the air-box, certainly...

Don't know, just bringing up both sides of the same coin...

I went ahead and had them put the Ford crate engine in. It seemed like the best deal going for me. They had it in stock, and I couldn't beat the warranty. 3 years or 75k miles, parts and labor. They will have it done this Friday.

I've only owned the truck for 4 months, it sure seemed like it was in good shape, but it just goes to show you never know what someone else has done to a used rig when you buy it

All my family are Chevy people, so I"m getting quite a bit of ribbing from them lol.

Once she is broken in you should have a strong and reliable motor

Redoing the front of the exhaust before the cat to a better designed "Y" instead of the necked down "T" two to one collector will help her breath a tad better and give a better throttle response feel

Re gearing to 4.10 or 4.30 is she has the typical 3.73:1 gears is the next bang for the buck power adder

I am not a big fan of tuners, chips or programers... but there are several that can significantly wake up the V10 4R100 combo with modest ignition, fuel injector, and shift point adjustments.... for max performance gain they all require higher octane fuel... but several of them have very modest programs that work fairly well on 87 low test fuels.

Once she is running right ... let one of your Chevy family challenge the V10 truck with ANY similarly sized and weighted truck...most v10s will out pull or run away from all but the lightest gas trucks out there and very easily stomp all stock diesels.... now a diesel on steroids is a different animal...very hard to whoop a trucks *** that has an excess of 600 HP and 1200 Ft Pounds shredding the dually tires....

Fortunately, the truck came with 4:30 gears, so that's a plus

I"m pretty big on keeping things stock, so no tuners for me. But the Y pipe idea sounds good. I'll have to check into that.

I figured on getting a few miles on it, and then showing those Chevy guys what it's all about lol.

On a side note. I notice some of you have a signature at the bottom of your posts. I don't seem to have the option to do that. Is there something I need to do to turn that on?

We used to have to pay and be a "supporter" to get the banner "signature" at bottom of posts

I think that has changed

If you read this , just scroll to top of page and find the leaf side link to "User CP" in the Blue header for the forum area

Click on that and very first left hand item should be "edit signature"

I've looked through them all, and can't find a space to type in my sig. It's not a big deal though

took a while ( I hate some things on this site like hidden rules and news)

well not really hidden---- just very hard to find

here is the new more gooder current signature policy

Signatures are now viewable in posts for all users, not just Club FTE users. No more floating signature for non-members. Users must have more than 25 posts to use signatures in order to prevent abuse of signatures (ie, advertisers/spammers).

You are still 17 posts away from getting the edit signature Link turned on
