Just had my batteries (7.3L diesel) run down to nothing after truck sat for about 2 weeks. I bought the truck 4 weeks ago and the batteries were installed April 05. I thought maybe it could be a short circuit in some old non-factory light wiring that the previous owner had put in. However, I discovered tonight that the glove compartment did not completely latch and the interior light was on. So now I think that may have been the issue. I'm still gonna check the old wires though. Anyway...here's the situtation. I just started the truck tonight after installing new batteries this weekend. The battery voltage meter initially jump around a little, reading about 9-12 volts. The jumping corresponded to the lights dimming and brightening. After a few seconds the meter steadied itself at about 13 volts (right on the money for recharging, right?) and the lights stayed steady. Is this normal, or could it have been the worn down battery (2 days with glove compartment light on) just hanging on until voltage regulator kicked in the alternator for recharge? I believe this is what happened....please confirm or help as I suck at understanding electrical systems.
I have a 1990 F350 with a IDI 7.3 diesel in it, and what you saw on the amp meter was the glow plug controller cycling. Mine cycles for I would guess at, 15 seconds or so until the engine doesn't need the glow plug help anymore. I would guess that this is normal.
