no heat, help

I have a 97 f-250 that won't heat over the "o" on the temp gauge. Heat blows cold no matter the temperature outside. Changed the thermostat, didn't help. Even put a piece of cardboard over entire radiator. Nothing. Wasn't bothering me through the summer but its getting cold and I don't like driving a truck all day with no heater. Thinking maybe the fan clutch is engaged?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

heater core pluged?

grab each of the heater hoses if one is hot and the other is stone cold its pluged (no coolant going through it). there should be about a 10-15 degree diference when its working properly which is kinda hard to tell by grabing it but if there both hot its good and I would check to make sure the temp control door is switching between warm and cold.

checked the hoses to the heater core and they both seemed very warm.

The heater hoses should be so hot that you can't hang on to them, both sides. Are they?

Did you get the right thermostat. The mega part stores may sell you the wrong part.

The temp gage is normal, "O" is about right in the winter.

The blend door in the heater box may be stuck in the 'cold' position. A bad temperature switch in the dash or the blend door actuator will cause this. It's vacuum operated.

Are you getting good air flow from all the outlets? Defrost, vent, floor vents.
Does the flow divert from defrost to the floor vents?

I agree with cuda, temp guage is about right, they are not real accurate anyway but I would go with the blend door as long your rad fluid is warm. there are two one inch hoses that go through your firewall on the passenger side, check those to see if they are both warm.

also if your fan clutch was not working, when shut off your truck the fan will unscrew, and then you will hear a krrrrthmp as it drops off the shaft and bites into the radiator causing all your fluid to leak out and using up a day to get the dang thing patched up. speaking from experience good luck
