I have a 05 super with the 5.4 L 3.73 ls auto trans with tow package when I tow or sometimes just drive if I coast down a hill then step on the gas to accelerate back up a hill the truck will hesitate like it just falls flat on its face and towing does suck like there not enough power
With the auto tranny in the superduties, the hesitation you feel is the torque converter. When you let off the gas the torque converter unlocks for coasting. Then when you accelerate it takes a second for it to re lock and put all the power from the engine back to the driveline. You don't have a lot of pulling power with the 5.4L so you probably are just feeling the engine strain to get back into the max rpm range.
I have noticed that sometimes these transmissions act kind of weird too. Like I will be cruising (unloaded & not towing), then i will slow down to take a turn, then after the turn when pressing the gas again the trans acts like it is in neutral for a 1/2 second or so, then it engages a little hard & then acts ok.
As far as more power, lower gear swap to a 4.56:1 is the only way to go.

You may not really feel the action I am talking about as much as you can watch the tach and definately see a slight jump in the rpm when you begin to accelerate after coasting like going down hill or just taking your foot off the accelerator. Watch it. It really does this on all the automatics in the superduties.
Well If I can't feel it I guess I don't care about it. I also have a predator hooked up so that changes some tranny settings. My guess is the new trannies in the 05's are all electric so maybe thats why.
Are you sure there isnt some type of delay between engine braking in tow/ haul before the trans picks the proper gear?I have an 06 but havent towed anything heavy enough to notice but I do notice in tow haul it will keep shifting to a lower gear to slow truck down.
I have an 06 F350 5.4 Super Duty, with the Torqueshift trans, and it shifts really good. In the tow/haul mode, the trans will down shift automatically when you slow down.
My truck does it to...its normal. I have a standard 4r100 transmission. Its just how the torque converter works in these trucks. Upgrad the torque converter if it really bothers you.
