Question Loose sterring wheel/column

My 98 F150 Scab started making an odd noise as you would turn the steering wheel. Now the steering wheel will move up, down, and side to side simply by moving it by hand. The steering gets tight at some points also. There does not seem to be any play at the tilt portion of the column.

I am thinking there is a bearing gone bad. This happened at work this morning while parking. Is it feasable to tear it down and renew the bearing/s or would I be better off to swap in a used column?

These steering columns are a bit of a pain to work on. It would be quicker and easier to just swap in another one but if you're patient you can pull it apart and see what happened.

Have you got a good shop manual for your truck? That would probably be a big help.

Speaking of patience....I've been substitute instructing the auto mechanics class at the local college and I'm finding out that patience is a good thing

Thumbs up

I took your advice and picked up a factory service manual on cd. A lot more detail than the haynes manual.

Good for you teaching is one of the reasons we were put on this earth. Learn, procreate, and teach.

This is why you need patience. About the time you figure out you can learn something from your dad you have a kid that thinks you know nothing.

Question

I give. How do you remove the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer?
Hate to break things and that retainer looks like it will break if I use any more force!

Well all buttoned up and back together. Replaced all three bearings even tho the front two were in pieces and the rear was fuctional. Little ball bearings everywhere. The top spring was in two pieces and a few washers and such were toast.

Had a little difficulty attaching the tilt part of the wheel. If I only had 4 more arms. Second time was the cherm. Put it together without the spring. Then collapsed the spring in a vise and used about 10 wire ties to keep it collapsed so I could insert it.

Another patience lesson almost learned. Only two trim screws left over.
