After using Vista for a couple of days at work, I have to say that I'm not overly overwhelmed by it.
These are brand new computers that came with vista installed and their processors are twice or more as fast as the old ones, my workstation went from 32 Megs of ram to a Gig and if I noticed any speed difference, it is probably slower, overall.
There are a couple of visual differences that are really underwhelming and the 3-D window view has gimmick written all over it.
One good thing I can say about it is that printing over a network and printing in general was a no brainer. We have a couple of old dot matrix prnters and an HP inkjet and didn't have to install any drivers for any of them, plus, printing over the network is fast. Click print and by the time you walk to the printer, the page is done. With the XP/98 setup, you could make a sandwich and coffee and have half the sandwich eaten before it started to print over the network.
If I was going to buy a new computer today I would seriously look at a clean install of Windows XP. I have found the same opinion by a much writer than me at Overclockers. If your use of a computer matches this, then it is good route to take.
