Here's my problem. I have an hp-photosmart 1215. This was purchased almost 4yrs ago but was only taken out of the box 2wks ago. So it is out of warranty. I got it hooked up and printing. I have probably printed about 100 pages in the last couple of weeks. Today I got a paper jam, there have been a couple of other there always are. But I can't get the Paper Jam code to go away. I finally got a Senior Case manager to talk to me and his answer was that It's just time to upgrade. Now he is aware of the history but he says thatit can't be fixed. He wants me to believe that a 2wk service life is reasonable. Also he is going to offer me a 50% discount on the purchase of a replacement unit, if I ship this thing to him in Canada, from Houston. If this one only lasted 2wks in service, does he really think I'm going to buy another HP product? I feel there is just some setting that needs adjustment but I'm not enough of a computer person to figure it out. Yesterday it worked, today it doesn't. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have a HP, not your model, that gets goofy ideas about warning notices etc. What I have done is unplugged it for a while and installed the software as a new printer than transferred the default printer check to the new folder. That fixed it. I don't know what unplugging would do but when a guy like me doesn't quite know what he's doing he tries everything. Have you tried an upgrade from their web-site? ....................... Good luck..
I have a hp printer again not the ssame as yours. I bought it off ebay. THe guy that sold it to me said it was a store demo and is on longer made. When I got it i found it didn't work. I called hp a explain what had happened. They (hp) said that they could see the the machine was never bought buy anyone. We worked out an agreement where i gave them $75 and they gave me a warrenty. They sent me a new rebiult machine and they took the my older machine. Every since I have bought HP and have excellent service with them.
I going to ask have you actully had it for 4 years in box?
I've unpluged it. Going to let it sit overnite. I'll try blowing it out, but I can't see anything in it. And it sat in the box for over three years. My wife bought it a couple of months before she died, and that was 4/02. I'm not the computer person she was and am just now trying to get things setup. She got real sick and never used the new computer and printer, webcam and voice link or the digital camera. I know I can't get anything for them and hate to waste it all. So I'm trying to learn to use it all. Thanks for all the ideas.
I work on printers for a living, your model HP can have a false jam indication caused by the a photosensor lens that fell off of the ink Carriage assy. If you open the front cover and move the carriage to the center of the printer, on the rightt side you will see a smaller rectangle box with a gold screw. Inside the plastic cover is the photosenser that looks down at the paper. It should have a clear plastic lens over the LED sensor. That lens cover sometimes falls off into the inkwell or elswhere in the printer. If you get lucky and find it clean it up with rubbing alcohol and superglue it back on.
Another paper jam sensor flag is accessible from the back removable cover assy it looks like a little black plastic flag that should move freely up and down on its pivot.
those are the only things that would cause the problem your experiencing.

I'm Sorry to hear about your wife, Holland.
I've had trouble with my HP 812C. I had to pull the back off to get a jammed piece of paper out that I couldn't see from the front. The Jam light was driving me crazy. Also, I've had to re-load my printer software several times because my HP computer could not recognize my HP printer. Have you down loaded new drivers? Three years is awhile. I hope it all work's out for you.
i also have a hp 1st generation photosmart. these things jam like crazy. when ours was under warrenty, the tech told us to always keep it full to avoid jams. the printter was a pos. we upgraded to a cannon s9000 and never looked back.
Everybody has been a big help but so far no luck. I plugged it back in and the paperjam message was gone. It looked like everything was ready to print. Then I brought it on line and sent it a page to print. It immediately showed the jam message again. It was like the computer was telling the printer it had a jam??? Soooo I dragged out this really old Brother MFC 4550 that we were going to up-grade from and hooked it up. Works perfectly. Trouble is it's just black and white. I'd really like to get the HP working, color when needed and photos from the camera. CRAVIN- I looked in the back and can't see any thing that looks like the small black flag you describe. Also, when the printer is off, the ink cartridges are to the extreem right under the housing. And when it is on, they are to the extreem left. Is there a way to move them w/o breaking something? Thanks again.
Holland I looked up your specific printer on HP's tech site to see if I could show you an exploded view of what I was trying to describe. Unfortunatly the available parts for that printer are mostly covers and peripheral components.
If I was going to service your printer I would recommend just replacing it.
Ink jet printers are disposable machines for the most part, HP makes a profit on the supply sales. Sorry I couldnt get ya going.
If it was mine I would try and fix it but my labor is free lol. I wouldnt pay to get it serviced by a shop.
Holland: i been repairing printers for some 24+ years, sounds like you have a false paper jam caused by the rollers not picking up the paper, most likely the rollers have deteriorated over the years and are no longer soft and plyable, you need to clean the rollers witha rubber restorer such as RE-GRIP look for it at electronic or computer supply outlets, the unit need not be hooked up to the computer as this is a local printer problem, To print a test page:
1 Make sure plain paper is loaded in the paper tray. If you need more
information, see “loading paper” on page 8.
2 On the Control panel, press the Tools button until the LCD asks if you
want to print a test page, then press OK/Yes.
check and see if the unit picks up the paper if not you will need to soften up the pick up rollers.
good luck
Not to hijack the thread or anything but i got a quick printer question too, while you experts are in the thread. I have an HO officejet 5110 that keeps saying the cartridges are jammed and it won't print. Any ideas? If its a quick fix that would be nice.. but like yall have been saying a new one is only ~$100 or so. Thanks.
Holland- that 50% off may or may not be worth it... after you ship that thing off and everything. These printers have become very cheap, they have a all in one print-scan-copy at walmart for 75 bucks and it has the ports where you can print directly off of your digital camera disk. Not a bad deal.. good luck.
Thanks to everybody. I left it unplugged for a few days and used the Tool Button like you suggested Hawk. Also tried cleaning the lens and re-fitting the cartriges. Something worked, because now it's printing, at least for now. Thanks again.
