questions on bilding an inline six

i've had my truck for a year and now and love it to death i would like to build the motor and all around truck to recieve more power

the truck is a 94 150 obviously an inline six reg cab short bed 4x4 it has 140,000 on it looking for tips and advce on building it. should i get a 4.9 motor build it and then swap or can you get good power of the block that is already in the truck with less work.

any links for peformance applications for the straight six to by aftermarket head, cam, intake or others. i've helped friends with their v8's but i'm excited to see what i can do with this "I6" and would apprecate ideas and suggestions thx guys

First, welcome! This forum has quite a bit, so search away and enjoy hours of reading. I am not familiar with the efi motors except that they come with a split exhaust manifold, so starting with dual exhaust and high flow cats would help. Another thing to look at is the gearing. Make sure it is in the correct range for your tires.

The main limiting factors on the EFI 300 are the stock computer and a lack of performance parts. There are no aftermarket chips or reprogrammers so you're limited by what the stock computer can adapt to... basically a mild cam and headers. A few people have tried installing larger injectors and adapting a larger throttle body from another engine [5.0 liter v8 ??] with mixed results, search the forum for previous posts on this. There no aftermarket intakes or such for the EFI 300.

There is a "universal" EFI management computer called the Megasquirt which will allow you to do all sorts of tuning and mods. Cost is usually in the $500 range to convert from stock. This is not a fully developed "plug and go" product, so there will be a good amount of fabrication and tweaking involved. If you have the dough and patients, switching to an aftermarket computer would allow you to run any sort of cam and exhaust you'd want, plus tinker with injectors and the throttle body.

I can't speak for everyone here but most consider the EFI a somewhat dead-end if you want to do anything beyond a mild warm-up. You can certainly wake up an EFI 300 with a new cam and exhaust, but that's about as far as you can go without very expensive & complicated computer swapping. On older carbed 300's you can select any intake/ carb/ cam/ piston combo you want and build away.

There is currently no aftermarket head for the 300. One is in development but probably still a year from public sale. It's going to be a performance aluminum job with much better flow characteristics. Cost?? God only knows. While you wait you can get noticeable improvements by porting/polishing the stocker.

cliffordperformance.net has headers, cams, and complete rebuild kits. if you want to get rid of factory efi, they have several intake/carb and tbi options.
