I am looking for a used Expedition and would like recommendations as to what year to buy. I have been reading about the problems with the plug blow out issues and the newer problem with the plugs breaking when removing. As I understand it the plug blow out issues were resolved in 2003, is this correct?? When was the newer 3 valve introduced, I believe in 2005, is this correct? The Expeditions that I have been looking at are between 2003 and 2006. What about recommendations between the older 5.4 and newer 3 valve 5.4. I am going to be using it to pull a boat, about 5000 lbs. I normally like to keep my trucks for a long time so not only performance is a concern but I need something that will last. I currently have a 1990 F-150 with 178,000 miles that is still running great. It has the 4.9 in it which seems to last forever.<O</O
We have 80,000 miles on ours and haven't had a problem. I just went through and did brakes and shocks and am planning on keeping it around for at least another 80,000 (going to do the plugs as soon as the weather warms up) We pull a wall trailer with about 2000 lbs of four wheelers and it doesn't have a problem with the hills around here. You might want to consider the terrain around were you will be pulling (we have allot of mountain passes) and how fast you think you need to be pulling most people think they can still go 85 and pull 10000 lbs with no problem. Whatever you find just look it over good and get it down to what you think is fair. I wouldn't worry to much about the supposed common issues that come up the thing about these forums is everyone on here is either a mechanic or already has a problem to get help with so all you hear about is the bad things and not the thousands of vehicles out there with absolutely no problems. Good luck and welcome to FTE
I am more concerned with the plug blowing issue than anything. I am also interested in hearing the benefits of the new 3 valve 5.4. With the added HP it may be worth buying a newer vehicle since I will be using it to pull.<O</O
