Hope things look up for your truck. I've always prided on having a clean car without many dents (one or two). I am still in shock that somebody would decide to key my car. I have a suspicion that because there are two other blue expeditions in the parking lot, one a 98 and the other an 01, the person that keyed my car could have thought it was one of the others. What bugs me MORE is the fact that at lunch today, the teacher I originally called about the whole ordeal told everbody that "I expected HIM" to pay for my damage. What I DID ask him was "what the situation is" and would the other school make any advances in paying for it.

Anyway, to get off my rant, I wholeheartedly agree with you that the point is to make what you have look good, regardless of condition. Besides, it's a pride thing.

Check out marsinternational.com to see if there is someone close to you who can help. They may be able to fix those scratches at a reasonable price.

Sorry to see what happened to your truck. People who key vehicles are cowards. If they have a problem with you they should have the b&lls to stand up to the person, not destroy a paint job. Very cowardly.

I took my truck in to one of those places that fixes dents, and does the paint chip repair, and $400 later I was not impressed. What they did, I could have done for less than $5.00 of touch of paint from Wal-Mart. They didn't even match the color.

Maybe try finding a local airbrush artist who does motor bikes etc, and they could probably help you out making the scratch a lot less noticable... Just a thought. Probably get it done for less than $100, including clear coat.

I talked to one after I had already "fixed" my scratches, and wished I would have gone with them instead.

Some idiot played tic tac toe on mine with their ring or key or something. 'Through the clear coat and some paint, but I don't think much primer or to bare metal. My '97 has the dark forest green paint. I got the Turtle Wax color wax with the color stick crayon applicator. This was more than 5 years ago and I haven't seen it for awhile. I'm surprised, because it worked pretty good and lasted a few years. I'm sure results vary with different colors. I just kept filling the scratch with this crayon, wiping it off and building it up until finally, using a linen cloth wrapped around a subway transit card, polishing it. This is flat plastic card the size of a credit card without the type relief. It keeps the cloth fibers from digging out the crayon you just worked hard to build up.
I know my damage isn't as long as yours, but if you can get this stuff or maybe something close from a crafts store, it's worth a try.

Thanks guys, all of your information as been very helpful. I took a look at the marsinternational site and they have a location close to me which is nice. Is there anything you can tell me about their work?

I agree that keying is a very cowardly thing to do. If I had seen him doing it he would agree that it was not the right choice to key my car haha.

Stephen, sounds like you have a good idea. It might be something to try before I take it into get repaired. Unfortunately I'm busy for at least a week or two. Thanks for the detail in your response. Since you said "without the type relief," I'm guessing you did it face down and not on the narrow side standing up.

Thanks

Yes, wrap the linen around the card, use the flat side to rub gently in a circular motion and not the edge as if to scrape or squeegee. You don't want to pull out any of the colored wax you built up in the scratch.

Mars does really good work and at a very reasonable price. Also they guarantee their work. Give them a try, it is cheaper then a body shop.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna try work on it here in a few weeks when I have enough time. I'll get back with results if I don't forget.

I don't know if this helps,do they have security camera's for the parking lot? nowdays the schools are adding cameras to find out who is comming and going. the school must have insurance for outside damage,go to small claims court and file a claim against the school.maybe they will settle out of court. get a couple of estimates to repaint that side so you know what the cost will be.hope this info helps you.

I feel your pain. Your scratches look a lot like the ones left by my rottveiler when (younger) he got real excited to see me. And he *loves* riding in the truck. Mine's the same color and the paint is sickenly thin.....

I use one of those touch-up pens and a little extra - follow the scratch real careful. Sand back with 2000 grit wet paper. Clean surrounding area first to remove wax.

Then overspray with rattle-can clearcoat. Wait a week and treat with fine color restor paste and elbow grease to merge the clearcoat. Honestly, you need to look real close at the riight angle in sunlight to spot the patch.

HTH - Lynn.
