water temp question

where is the water temp taken off the engine my gauge on the dash is not working 88 4.9L 4X4 manual thanks

There is a coolant temp sensor in the pipe coming off the water pump to the heater hose, but I believe this sensor is used strictly by the EEC. The sensor for the gauge is on the passenger side of the engine block right below the #6 exhause manifold tube (at the back of the block). Check here, and someone correct me if im wrong
