So, I got tired of reading one more post on how a 400 wieghs as much as a 460. I did a little digging around and found these following engine weights. Check out how much a SBC weighs:
SBC pre-1985: 575lbs
- L98 (5.7L TPI): 600lbs
MOPAR small LA: 525lbs
MOPAR 360: 550lbs
AMC late 360-401: 540lbs
AMC early 327-343: 600lbs
There are a number of engine weight "lists". Many of them do not specify if with or without accessories, or even with or without heads. About the only thing a person can do is weigh them personally to be sure.

Dave Williams site. The weights I dug up matched the ones he had listed. Info was possibly cut and pasted from all the same sources.....or straight from his site. Either way, your first point is true but I still find it interesting what these common listed weights are, especially when your hear the same old mis-information reposted time and time again.
That was an interesting weight site. I had never seen that one.
As far as 400-460... Anyone that had ever seen them side by side would not make idiotic statements about the 400 being heavier. When you have been here as long as some of us have been you will get used to the same mis information posted again and again. I moderated the Garage forum when it got started and it didn't seem that a week went by that someone didn't post about it being OK to use PVC for airlines... AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I've been on this and several other sites for many years. I move around a lot with work and drop on and off the sites. A few times I've had to rejoin different sites so I've slowly changed all my logons to the same.
Sure am glad to see some others that seem to agree on this subject . I have replied to posts and posted on this subject on other forums and get the usual disbelief--. I have given up on the 351M/400 issue. I did have one or 2 credible people on another forum that say they saw ford material that said 400M. Because of them, I no longer argue that issue. To me its 351M/400, but its really moot, we all know what the engines are. Also a lot of opinions as to big/mid/small block. Sure dont want to start any of that here!
I am thinking that the "Dave Williams" figures are based on complete engines, excluding front dress. Also thinking that all are iron intakes, iron heads, which gives us a comparison figure, regardless of what the actual attachments are, as long as each engine is similarly equipted. My thinking is that the 429/460 is ~720#, which is considerably heaver than the 400's. Not an argument that the 460 is more powerful. Anyway, happy to see some other help
