Im not sure what is going on here but here goes: I have a 1990 f350with a 5.8 gas engine, I just did a complete tune up including plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Now I have a strange thing happening. When I start driving in the morning the temp goes to the high side of normal (to the L ) then shoots back down low ( to the N) then gradualy goes back to the center. I was thinking the thermostat was just opening causing this. Now when I drive on the highway it goes up and down. It always ran normal before this. Today It was running hot again so I went up a large hill and got on it about half way up the temp shot down to cool again and stayed there untill I stopped, then went to normal. What is going on here??? I was thinking a screwed up thermostat. I checked the temp with a infared temp sensor and at the intake it was about 190 and at the themostat outlet it was 205. Also the radiator cap is only about 50 degrees .
Sorry so long but im confused,, or maybe this is normal
I didnt catch if you had replaced the thermostat yet. Mine use to do that and I actually had replaced it before all this started. I then went to NAPA and got a GOOD thermostat. STANT one. and it fixed the whole cooling issue. So if I were you I would go get a GOOD thermostat and try that.
