What year is your truck? If its a '96, I believe you just plug it in and move the key to the "ON" position to read codes. If it is older than that (OBD 1), then, from what I can remember from mine (its not with me right now and I haven't used it for about a year), you warm up the engine, plug it in, turn the key on to read the key on, engine off codes. To read the key on, engine running codes, the procedure is the same, except while it is reading codes, you let the engine run and turn the steering wheel, to put a load on the engine I assume, then you hit the gas when its done scanning. To be honest about the engine running procedure, my code scanner just tells me what to do when I need to do it, so the procedure I gave may not be exactly correct. Last, but easiest, are memory codes. All you do is plug it in and read the codes. Sorry this is kind of vauge, but like I said, my scanner just tells me what I need to do when I need to. Also, I don't know about your scanner, but reading OBD 1 codes requires an external 12v source (cigarette lighter) for the scanner as power is not supplied through the ECM connector as with OBD 2 ('96), otherwise, it won't operate. I hope you have a '96 truck for simplicity's sake.

Ok, better yet, I looked up your code scanner, and apparently, Actron aquired sunpro awhile ago, and they still make the cp9015 scanner. This one doesn't requre an external power imput. More importantly, they had a user manual that is more "user friendly" and is pretty clear on what to do.Go check it out, but if you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) on your computer, you cannot download the .pdf file.
