I've got my eye on some 427 rods on evilbay. My question is is there any difference between 390 and 427 rods? I know they are the same lenth from what I've read but is there any benifits to sway me one way or another? What I'm doing is changing my 360 to a 390 since you guys say thats the way to go.
Thanks guys!
I can't say for sure. My 390/427 has aftermarket rod's in it and they are way stronger looking than the stock 390's they replaced. Having the rotating assembley professionally balanced lets it turn rev's that that are scary.
Mostly just the bolt size. But there were casting changes also over the years. The C3AE-C is the same as the later C7AE-B rods. Both rods came in large and small bolt sizes. I'd think a set of ARP rod bolts are just as effective in a small bolt rod. Be sure to ask or specify the bolt size in the one's your watching as some guys are unaware and just go by the casting number. FWIW a guy on www.fordfe.com just posted a ad for a reconed set of big bolt C3-C 427 rods for $20 each or $160 for the set. That's a good price for a set that's be sized and bushed with new bolts. 3/8" and 13/32" are the two small and large bolt sizes. LeMans rods are capscrew rods and those were 427 and 428SCJ applications. Very good rods and came in a few variations also. Those sell for $300 and up depending on condition.
I would never mix rods like that. I recommend (for what it's worth) a matched set. I have a new crank in a 302 that was in my boat when I got it. First run it started to hammer so came in on the kicker. put in new crank and made it a mile before it started to hammer. Tore engine down and found mismatched rods.
The choice is yours as for most It may work. It didn't for me.

Thank you, what I wanted to hear. I will look at a matched set.
I agree with G, and Artic... and Krtalso..Neber buy a mixed matched set of rods for the fact is even at the factory they were Not closely matched..for one.. and there's probably a reason why there's only X amount in that batch..which makes me think that someof the reat (other 2) were damaged in some way) and the rest maybe Fatigued<sp?....
Buy a set like G said..re-sized and ready to go if your going that way...
But you can But a higher strenth rod thru many source that are closer in weight Gram Matched and are stonger with the ARP bolts!! JMO... 6.490" is what your looking for .... For your build..
Mismatched rods more likely came from a reman motor. They pull a few dozen engines apart and reman everything then grab parts off the shelf in reassembly. In anycase, I too, wouldn't run mismatched sets if I had the choice.
