The fuel tank on my 1965 F-350 was extremely dirty and beyond the point of cleanability (is that even a word? haha). I had another gas tank that came with my 1970 pickup and it is the exact same size as the one out of the 65. So I put it in and bought new fuel lines, and then I noticed that on the new tank the part where you screw the fuel line into the tank was much larger than the fuel line bolt. I measured it and the threaded part of the tank is 5/8 inches wide, and the fuel line is only 7/16. No hardware store around has any brass adapters that go from 5/8 to 7/16. Has anybody else had this problem? Is this tank possibly out of a larger Ford truck? And does anybody have any ideas how to hook my fuel line to this tank? Buying a brand new gas tank is not something I want to do. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you Garrett
You may check w/ auto supply store and see if they have the correct brass adapter. If not, then I would take measure'mts, and purchase a new line w/ the correct fitting and bend to desired shape. If the donor truck fuel line is still around then use it, or pick up a later model fuel line next time salvage shopping.
Thank you for your reply. I guess the only thing I am worried about is whether they even make fuel lines with fittings that big anymore. At least when I bought my new fuel lines they had 5/16 and 3/8 and I dont think the fittings on the 3/8 line were big enough. But I will check that again and check some auto stores for an adapter. Thanks for the help!
Look for it in the brake line section of most auto parts stores. I know Napa will carry the correct size tube with a fitting to thread into your tank. It has a 3/8 or 7/16 tube kind of like the 3/16 or 1/4 brake tube. Use a tubing bender to shape it like the original one.
Should be able to locate at local auto supply, as airharley noted Napa should have them. Most of the Ford Part Suppliers, LMC to name one, has fuel lines of various length and fitting sizes, the shipping cost more expensive than cost for part. Also, may want to consider installing either canister, or inline filter. Installed a filter on the inner fender before the fuel pump on both 65 F100's and amazrf how dirty the cartridge can get sometimes.
Ford replaced the original 1961/66 F Series gas tank (C1TZ-9002-H) in 1970...using that years tank.
When you bought a 1970 gas tank for your 61/66, it came with an adapter kit including a fitting to make it all possible. The 1970 tank holds 19.5 gallons, 1 1/2 more gallons than the earlier tank.
I have not been able to discover exactly what the adapter kit was or used, sorry.
Thank you very much for all the help. Hopefully I will be able to get out tonight before stores close on me and find the correct tube size. I was totally unaware that they had so many different sizes. FTE is awesome. You guys make working on old Fords a pleasure!
