you can get adapter plates to fit if you are going to go to different sizes, what is going to sound best is to go to a set of seperates, get away from the coaxial type speakers. if you get a plat to fit a 6" and a tweeter you are going to get much cleaner sound then with a 5x7 coax type speaker.
I've been out of the market for a long time SPL tech would be able to answer better but if you are looking for a high end very nice replacement speaker set, look into JBL or MB Quart i think Infinity is decent stuff as well. now if you are not much of an audiophile and just want some upgrades you could look into the plethera of brands from sony to pioneer to kenwood alpine in nice stuff, some online priceing should be available at www.crutchfield.com
I agree, Crutchfield is going to be your best bet for affordable upgrades. And anything you buy comes with plug adapters so you don't have to cut and splice wires.
actually, the size of the 6 speakers are 6X8's. i replaced mine with 2 sets of infinity and 1 set of rockford fosgates. all were 6X8's. added an amp, new head unit, 2 12" subs. sounds awesome. i have some pics in my gallery of the old system. new pics to follow..
I do not know what the stock speaker size is on the X's for I have not installed my speakers yet. However is they are 5x7's then any aftermarket 5x7 should fit in there. If they are 6X8's then any aftermarket 6x8 should fit in there. If not you will have to do a bit of drilling and screwing but if you know how to change your transmission fluid I am confident you can figure out what needs to be done.
Anyway there are many good brands out there. What are you looking for? Some of good brands out there are: Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, JBL, Eclipse, MB Quart, Infinity and Alpine. I suggest alpine if you want a lot of bang for your buck. Alpine speakers aren’t too expensive and you get a fair amount of performance out of them for what you spend. Rockford Fosgate and Kicker also make very good speakers. They are a bit more expensive, but they sound better then Alpine (in my opinion). There are other good brands but that’s all I can think of at the moment.
www.crutchfield.com is a rip off. eBay.com is the place to look. Or google.com.

I think Ford calls them 5x7 but the aftermarket makes some 6x8 that will fit the Ford application. I used 6 Pioneer TSA 4 ways 6x8 and it now sounds great. They bolt right in, just need to make the wires match (I bought adapter harness 'cause I didn't want to cut my stock wires).
The are without a doubt 6x8s. I replaced the front two and put a powered Bazooka with slave unit in the third seat footwell.
Bear in mind that if you leave the factory system in and merely change the speakers you will loose a lot of bass response. I changed the fronts to get more highs, and then added the subs. I wanted to retain the factory head unit. Sounds great.
Off topic...Racer...how you doin? We have to catch up.

That’s probably mainly because OEM speakers have paper cones and paper cones have excellent bass response levels. Most aftermarket speakers are not paper. In fast very few are. Most are aluminum or plastic.
yes you can fit an amp under the seat. AND AGAIN, THEY ARE FACTORY 6x8 SPEAKERS. FORD CALLS THE 6x8 AND THERE ARE ALOT OF AFTERMARKET 6x8 SPEAKERS. THE REASON YOU FIT THE 5x7 IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE SAME PATTERN OF THE 6x8.....DEFINATELY FACTORY 6x8 SPEAKERS. i am going to post some more pics of my system soon.
