hey guys well i guess you've heard about my charging battery problem. every morning the truck has to be jumped to get going becuse its completly dead. all my accessories are off i dont know what it is. i tested the battery in the morning it was a 5 volts telling me i needed to change it but after i jump it, it runs fine and everything works is my alternator not charging the battery. also i have a plow that is ran off the battery and everytime i go to raise or angle the plow i look at the batt. gauge and it goes down far then rebuilds power what is it? how do i test if my alternators bad?
help soon!!
thanks
your battery is bad. the reason it stays running during the day is because the alt is working properly keeping it charged enough. you may also need to replace both battery cables
Try disconnecting the pos. battery cable after Its started! if it dies your alternator needs to be replaced! If not your battery needs too be replaced! hope this helps!!
dont do that. especially on an efi equipped rig. thats a good way to fry something. the alt will not be able to regulate its output. get the battery tested, most places do it for free
Ya what Kem said. Try disconnecting it at night right after running it and the batt is charged. If it starts in the morning you have an amp drain. Under stand that this will reset the computer and the clock will need reset as well. But will not harm the system. Watch for an arc when reconnecting with no dome light or anything on as this is a sure sign of a current draw. This test will be no different than changing the batt so it can't harm the system. If done properly.
Friend of mine had an older Ford car that did the same thing. Dead every morning. We disconnected one battery lead and put a meter, in current mode, in series between the battery and the lifted lead. He had a three amp draw with everything off. We started unplugging things until the draw went away. In his case, is was a bad voltage regulator on the fender wall. Replaced it and all was well.
Good thing it was only three amps as my meter has a five amp fuse.
don't know if this will help you or not but most guys i know with plows run two batteries in their trucks. not my area of knowledge so i dont know why. ill ask a couple of them and let you know. or maybe youll get lucky and yardape will post on this.

Well... he said it all for me. Even the worst battery will be able to keep the circuit closed so the truck will work just fine after you jump it, the good news is your alternator is working just fine, now just go buy that new battery.
