My F-250 hasen't seen the road for a year. Been busy. A week prior to the problem I had 50 sheets of 3/4 plywood hauling up hill with no problem. Lots of power. Then one day drove to town and came out of a store and started it up and then rough running no power. Barely made it home at 35MPH. No power, running real rough, starts great, idles fine but rough, both gas tanks act the same, battery Ok. I didn't know the compressions before but they are like this. 90,110,100,120,90,100,110,85. Computer comes up with no error codes found. I thought maybe a timing chain slip but I checked timing with a light and it is right on. I am a good old world mechanic but not sure where to look. Fuel or electric. Questions
1) Fuel. Anyone know how to test fuel pressure at the engine. Fuel injected. If I only had a carb. Don't know how to test injector systems.
2) Electrical. Not sure what to do here. Are there some voltages that might give me a clue.
Thanks for reading
There is a valve on the fuel rail on the front drivers side fuel rail. Get a pressure tester and screw it on the valve and then turn the key on and look at the gauge. It should be about 35-45 psi.
I got this rig with 200k miles on it. Dont know anything about maintance but it is in good shape. I will get to Napa this morning to get a brass fitting for my fuel pressure gauge. If anyone is interested the thresd size coming out of the fuel manifold is 5/16-24.I did notice yesterday as it sat at idle that the exhaust is very rich in fuel. I will check the fuel pressure but since it's running rich I'll bet it is an electrical problem. I will search the site for fuel filter location/picture and pick one up.
Got my fuel pressure. If any one else is doing this I would suggest you find a tire valve stem connector that is a screw on or lock on type. I used a lock on type and connected it to my fuel pressure tester. I got 45 PSI with the key on and the same with the engine running. I will presume the fuel system is fine for now. I will put on a new filter as soon as I find the big problem.
So anyone have ideas how to test any part of the electrical. How about coil resistance. How about from the high voltage coil lead to ground? I do alot of electronic stuff. Is there a way to test signals to the injectors?
