i know this issue has been asked to death but here goes. know that i have my 64 there really aint that big of a hurry to get the 59 running so i was thinking of maybe adapting a 5 speed tranny to my 292. i know the t5s are a popular option but i was wondering wether there was something else out there. maybe something out of a newer ford pickup or something. i need something pretty beefy as im running four wheel drive and i would like something with a pretty low first gear, i dont need it super low like a t98 but something in the 4or5 to 1 ratio would be nice for starting out loads and crawling around in 4wd. im not to worried about adapting it i can weld and cut crossmembers or what ever and have acess to a machine shop so i can make adapter plates or whatever. so anybody got any suggestion or know of a newer ford pickup that came with a 5speed manual. thanks in advandce
The only Ford 5spd I know of with a low first gear that was a 87-96 ZF 5spd in the F-250/350 trucks. They were put behind 351w, 460 and the 7.3L diesel. They are a tough tranny and are available in 4wd versions. It even has a hydraulic clutch so you could probably modify the stock setup to work. It also has PTO ports if needed.
Ranger pickups used a Mazda 5-sp box that is pretty beefy, the M5R1, and it came with 4x4's so you can undoubtedly find one with a transfer case. They aren't light, they aren't small, and they aren't cheap for parts like a T-5. Also there are variants of the T-5 used in Jeep Wranglers.
The Mazda 5spd (F-150 tranny) were okay for cruising and light loads but if you towed, carried heavy loads or put lots of power through them they blew up. They also don't have a low first gear.
On the ZF, search through the 73-79 forum and you will find some good info.
