Mine is mounted just the oposite of your's. Mine has the wide part on the bottom and the SAE #s are upside-down.

I bought the truck a year ago from the original owner with just 32,000 miles on it. Who's to say the assembly person didn't mount every-other one upside down?

I have been grabbing these cargo lamps to one day add it to my 68 f-100.

Here is my 2 cents worth.

If the cargo lamp could go on either way it would at the plant. Quality control was not what it is today. If a part can go in backwards it will. People at the plant look for these things. Its a moral victory over the genius engineers that design them.

I would look at the wire if it is coming from the driverside do not turn the cargo lamp around and twist the wire.

If the glass it self has an angle to it I would guess the angle would be pointing down towards the bed of the truck.

Do not assume that the letters in the lens will be rigtside up. I have seen plenty of these up side down before in other applications.

Looking at a Bump Side forum that shows pictures and specs for 67 thru 72 trucks it shows the lens frame mounted both ways and this is from Ford's original advertisement literature.
As far as twisting the wires 180 degrees to rotate the frame I wouldn't worry about wire damage, it will twist.
As far as lens directing light in a downward direction I haven't seen a difference by rotating frame and testing at night.

How hard is it to install a cargo light on a truck that did not have one originally?

Fastmover, It's not that hard. I installed on on my truck. I used a Dremmel Tool with a cutting wheel. Take your time for a nice job. Purchase a new rubber gasket and use that as a template. Then run your wires and put in a switch. Took me about a half a day to do it slow and right.

I did the third brake light deal a couple of years ago; cool idea on the 1157 change to still utilize the cargo. I might change mine over but my son might hate me if I remove the line lock switch to somewhere else - the cargo light switch is currently in use.
