I have a 77 F150 with a 300 I6. It has pre-existing tuned headers (no idea what brand). I just got a Offy DP intake and I just found out that it won't clear the headers to bolt up to the engine. It hits on 3 of the 6 tubes. Anything I can do to my headers or do I have to buy a new set?
I just installed my offy DP and I have a hedman header and everything fit pretty well. You are in for a big treat when you get it all hooked up and running. Mine is off the chains!!!! Way better than stock....night and day! Is your header 6 into 1 or 6 into 2? I wouldn't be beating on your header too much, dents cause poor performance. 300i6van85 was right if there is just a very minor clearence problem.....but I would just get a new one and sell yours on ebay.
i think the answer to your question is 6 into 2 meaning I have 2 seperate headers that marry up onto my engine under my intake. What did you put you headers onto and what is the part #. I am looking at getting new hooker headers (part #HOK-6823HKR)
I have the inline 6 same as you. I ordered the hedman header (HED-89300 ) from summit, it is one piece but takes six exhaust ports and turns them into two collectors so you can run dual exhaust! And it is such a big difference in performance. I don't know too much about the hooker headers. What do you plan on running for a carb?
i have the same carb as you, a Holley 390 4bbl, by the way, did you have any problems with the throttle linkage/bracket? I read something about Offy recommending that the primaries mount toward the head and that makes the linkage toward the firewall.
I believe that tuned headers means that they use the same length of tube for each exhaust port by the time it meets up in the collector so that they are all equal. I did have problems with the Holley linkage hitting my intake. I bought a 1" riser from ebay and that cured my linkage problems. You do have to get a bit creative when hooking up your throttle linkage to the carb. And yes, you want to mount your primaries closest to the motor. I found that out on this forum from some nice guys that had already done it, and it worked great.
if you have the money to spend then go for it! That's all I use my truck for is off roading and towing my car trailer. The offenhauser dp/holley 390 probably hurt my low end torque a little but the header didn't. I gained almost all my power from 1500rpm~4000rpm. Before my motor wouldn't even rev past 3100rpm. check out this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ml#post4351680
I have the same combo on mine, thing runs like a champ. I also have the heddmans, I think they may be tuned also because of how loopy they are. Tuned has to do with tuned (equal) length.
I had to notch my frame to run them, I fought them for hours the first time trying to get them on. The guy at Summit Racing was right, the two wheel drives are different than the four wheel drives in '69. 2xs don't have boxed frames whereas the 4xs do. Oh well, lesson learned.
