I have an 85 bronco-rust free-with very minimal body damage. I have a 351 windsor out of a 1970 mustang that is complete, but it needs rings. I rode in the mustang when this motor was in it, it was pretty fast for a 2 bbl motor. How much wieght difference is there between the two? I would think the mustang to be quite a bit heavier so that motor ought to scoot that bronco really good. I also have a parts truck(F250) with the same gears(3:55). So how about an 85 bronco with a 70 351w, 3/4 ton axles(not the springs, just the axles) on say 33's? I have an 83 f-250 diesel on 38 swampers, and this would be more of a daily driver, I even cosidered a blade to push snow when I'm done.
Does your bronco have a 300 or 302 in it? It should be an easy swap if you have the 302. Seems like the Bronco would be heavier than a Mustang since you have a transfer case, front drive axle and bigger tires.
No, actually it has a 300-6 in it. It still should be an easy swap. Also, I would give the weight to the mustang because of the length of the nose, thickness of sheet metal etc. Maybe someone in here has a weight for the 1970 mustang coupe and the 1985 bronco?
personally i love the 300-6 its one of fords best motors. lasts forever, easy to work on and has almost as much torque as a 302. i say stick with that. the mustang motor is going to be setup for more hi rpm needs which in a heavy bronco is not the right setup. also are you sure that motor isnt a Cleveland?
I could be wrong but a 1970 stang would not of had a windsor in it would it? would it not have been either a cleaveland or a modified? and if that is the case it would be more difficult. not impossible just more parts needed, transmission, exhaust, motormounts, trans mounts. most of which you are going to need anyways but most of these you are going to have to either find or make.
1. the 300 six is completely wore out and gutless. The front main and head both leak oil. The intake is cracked and sucking air. (Ether test)
2. I personally guarantee it is a windsor out of a 70 mustang coupe that my dad bought as the second owner of the car.(Dad was a factory ford mechanic in late 60's early 70's)
3. there is no way I will ever consider pulling my 352 out of my 65 for this motor.
4. there is no way I will ever consider pulling my 6.9 out of my f-250 on 38's. That's just absurd, I doubt it would do worth squat in that truck.
5. the only other consideration for that motor is my 98 explorer 2wd. I have researched this one, it can be done but there is a huge amount of fabrication involved. Besides it's only a 2wd, what a waste.
oh- homenf- thankyou. I was way off on my weights of both vehicles. You guys never cease to amaze me. I love it when someone does this, that's why I love this site so much. The 300 six is an awsome motor, definitely one of fords better ideas, and, as i have personally witnessed, almost impossible to kill. However with future plans of the 3/4 ton axles, and possibly a blade, this is why I want to put it in my bronco. My only concern is the tranny. It is an overdrive tranny, and with this motor, 4th gear is completely useless until 65 mph. Thanks again on the weights, it does help to put a little more perspective on this idea.
Change the rings and rock it! The good thing about the 85 is all the room to work with in the engine compartment. I would say if your changing the front axle, do it without the engine installed but have it ready to mock install for measures.
I agree-The axle swap will come after the motor swap and it'll get new coils. Oh yeah, another bonus, don't have any idea if this is common or a special order deal, but it also has the dual shock towers on it too. I want to keep the softer 1/2 ton suspension as it will flex and ride better than the leafs. I figure I'll probably have to change the perchs out where the springs hit the axle and whatever related bracketry. A little time and I'm sure it can be done. I hate the TTB setup, but I have already been thru the ringer on my F250 TTB. Plus, I think it's superlift who has one sweet setup for steering the TTB's. Sure would like to have one for both trucks!
Not that i don't beilive that your 70 stang had a windsor in it or not. i actually didn't think they were made till later in life but i found an interesting link to help identify and make sure for you. it states that in fact the 69's came mostly with windsors and the 70's came mostly with cleavelands but there were in rare cases either engine in both years. it goes on to tell how to identify easily the differences in the two. http://www.karmustang.com/cleveland_engines.php
I appreciate your taking the time to do this, again the very reason I love this site. However dad and I are both diehard ford fans, that's all we buy, so I can tell at a glance it's not a cleveland. If it were anything other than a windsor, it'd have to be a 302, but I seriously doubt that.
dont go with the 3/4 ton ttb front end. in all honesty its not much stronger then whats already in the bronco. for plowing i would go with a sas, locate a hi pinnion D44 or even a D60 and run that with a set of leafs. do a search online for SAS forums there is one which can not be named that is all they talk about. give prices on parts its amazing all the info and different things guys have done.
