Help with my heat

I have a slight heat problem in my 2000 F250 with a 7.3 in it. I have been having problems with my defrost. The problem is its stuck in defrost while my damn feet are freezing. I located the vacuum accuatuator behind the glove box. I was in the process of removing it to replace when I thought I would try it again. Low and behold it worked and I could change to all positions. Its been about two weeks and on my way to the airport to pick up someone today it stuck in defrost again. I am almost certin its not the accuatuator. Im assuming there is a vacuum motro somewhere, I just dont know what im looking for. I think its on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the firewall. THere is somthing im not familliar with there that has hoses connected to an oval shaped box which I think may be the vacuum pot? Does anybody know if im right by any chance. and if I am, how do I test if its the motor, or a leaking hose that I may not be able to clearly see. I am getting tired of cold feet all the time.
