This is gradually getting worse. '95 stock w/ 5 sp. 113k mi. I bought this truck new, and it would occasionally act this way when stopping at an off ramp after pulling my trailer down the freeway (though not this bad). Now, it acts up even after just starting it warm. It's to the point where almost every stop sign causes it to start shaking the tin. And it's shaking harder all the time. It doesn't die, and pulls fine under load, and will usually smooth out if I "blip" the throttle. Hot or cold, summer or winter.
I want to get this figured out - and put a clutch in it - so we can do some traveling.
I know somebody here can get me pointed in the right direction.
It might just need some new IPR o rings. That usually clears up a rough idle. If not there might be some burnt wiring under the valve covers, or weak/ bad injectors.
If you think it needs a clutch you may just have a bad flywheel. Does it rattle when you crank it and when it turns off does it clank off not just die.
No, the clutch doesn't rattle. But it will squeal when engaging from a dead stop in 2nd. Sounds like a rivet. The friction plates are about 3/16" thick (just eye-balling).
The idle thing doesn't fire the check engine light, either. Maybe I need to find a code reader.
when you shut it off do you get a clunk. It sound like a bad dual mass flywheel, and if you use the truck for pulling, and have worn the clutch that much in 113 k I would say that it is that. Carolina clutch has a SMF flywheel conversion that is great. They are our forum sponsor. If you are going to do the clutch replace it with a SMF clutch kit, it will probably fix the problem. Does how you disengage the clutch affect the rattle or cause it some times?
If you are pretty sure its not the clutch, I would check the valve cover wiring just because that doesn't cost anything, and if that doesn't get you anywhere I would change the ipr or its orings there is a good how to site on this I will se if I can find it tonight. Just like foreman said.
I must be getting dense in my old age - the idea that the flywheel might be causing all this is just sinking in!! I'll try easing out the clutch to see if that quiets it down. Hell, I think I need a new one anyway. Thanks
On another note - I'm on a V-Star 1100 forum, and they have put together a page of FAQ, and common solutions. It even includes some procedures, or links to, modifications. It really cut down on often repeated questions - like mine.
