Axle Swaps???

My 97' F150 4X4 has 3.55 gears and I would like to upgrade to 3.73's. Will axles from a newer truck bolt up? What if they're 9.25" vs. 8.8"? I have read that lower gearing really helps the 4.6 on the low end with out killing gas mileage, assuming you don't go too low. I'm not looking to get any radical improvements, just want to make the usual tasks (occasional load of lumber, pulling a camper 8 or 10 times a year) a little easier on the engine. What do you guys think?

You would save a lot of time and money if you just get a new Ring and Pinion in the gear ratio you want.

I'm running 265-70 16's. I found several stock 3.73 gear sets on ebay. But I've always heard that swapping gears required some special tools for setting backlash and other stuff, and that even with the right tools it was still pretty tricky. I'm pretty handy with anything mechanical, I've rebuilt engines in cars, atv's, etc. But I have absolutely no experience with diff's. Thats why I was looking at swapping out the whole thing.

I see that you have a 4x4, If you are changing gears to 3.73 from 3.55 you are going to need to change the front gears also to 3.73.

Yes, I had already figured on doing both diff's. If I just swap out the gears in them would I need more than just the ring and pinion sets. Will the clutch in my rear diff work with 3.73 gears?

Its really not to bad of job once you have done it a couple of times. Except for the back lash... that is kinda tricky. Your best bet is to let sombody who knows what there doing to help you with it. Im sure that you can figure it out but alot of times when sombody who is new to it does it, you will have a humming noise especially when decelerating.
