Replacing Slave Cylinder

Hello All,

So, I've decided to go ahead and replace the slave cylinder in my '93 F150. I have a few questions I was hoping y'all could help me out with...

1. I've read that the slave cylinder is located internally within the bell housing. Am I going to need to actually drop the entire tranny, or can I somehow just slide it back enough to get into the bell housing. Just thinking of how I'm going to jury-rig if I have to drop the entire tranny...

2. Should I go ahead and replace the pressure plate? I think it's a slow leak (i.e. i'm adding tranny fluid every week or so), so i imagine the fluid is going somewhere within the bell housing. Could I just try and clean the plate instead of buying a new one?

3. Any other tips/advice would be suuuuper useful!!!

Thank you all in advance!!

If you have the M5OD and you are adding tran fluid then I will bet that your shift rail boots are leaking. There are 3 5/8" rubber boots on top of the tranny. This is a known problem with this tranny. They are not hard to change and there is a write up about them somewhere on here just do a search on the M5OD.

i just finished putting my clutch in and i replaced the slave and in order to replace the slave you have to remove the trans as the slave is around the input shaft bolted to the inside of the trans and i don't think there is a way to replace it without removing the trans. be sure to buy the quick discconnect tool for the hydraulic line the the slave. you can disconnect it with a screwdriver but it sure saves a big headache and i bought mine for 5.00$ at carquest. If i was you while i had the trans out i would replace the clutch plate while your in there already especially if it has been coated in brake fluid. you can just inspect the pressure plate and make sure it is not excessivley worn or bent fingers, but i would advise getting the flywheel turned in case of hotspots and so the clutch will wear in properly.

Thanks a bunch for the responses!!

Grumpy - You bring up an interesting point. I hadn't heard of this problem, but having just read a thread on the M5OD, it does sound like this is a usual problem. The symptoms sound very similar to mine as well. Further, I would think that if the slave was leaking, the clutch would start to slip as the plate became covered with fluid, correct?

ALSO: dumb question, but I just want to make sure that my tranny is indeed the M5OD. Again, it's a '93 f150 XLT 4x4 with a 5-speed manual. Anyone?

Anyway, I think I may look into this problem a bit more....

Thanks again everyone!!

well your slave cylinder has brake fluid in it not trans fluid. so if you have to add trans fluid. then its not your slave cylinder. and yes it should be a m505
