I have a clunking noise under the truck . This is a 2000 250SD 4X4 v10.
The noise is coming from the front while driving and sounds like it is right under my feet. Happens when I hit like road imperfections of wash board area's. Looking for area's to look. Any advice before I climb under the truck in the cold would help. Did this in the summer also, but was not as noticable.
Came here since I recieved help with my locking hubs and lubricating them.
reach behind your front tires and try shaking the u-joints where the axle shaft comes out of the axle and into the hubs. If it moves around it is time for new seals. this may be your clunking problem.
The early trucks had issues with lower ball joints and the wheel hubs are also a problem... they are a sealed unit...I know of a few that made a lot of racket on bad roads but sounded fine on level smooth roads
you might also have missing for worn out leaf spring isolator pads...the nylon/plastic seperators between leafs that can cause a lot of noise during compresion or rebound but usualy not a thump more a screach or scrape sound... But I have seen leaf speing isolator rubbers in the eye end get worn enough for the connector bolt/pin to hit the eye and sound like a clunk so check out the condition of the leaf springs at the shackles
Another common clunk is NOT from your front end but actually at your center bearing carrier for the two piece drive shaft ....the slip yolk needs to be removed and the splines greased... early units were not assembled with very much or any silicone grease and the splines start to bind and then release and sounds like a loud clunk
Mine's doing the same thing...sway bar end links are failing and it's pretty common according to my dealer..will be replaced under warranty once I get a few other things wrong to make the $100 deductible worth it.
