I have had the CEL on for a while and this forum has been very helpful. I have an 01' 4.6 125K and I removed the upper intake and cleaned out the carbon form the 2 holes which was clogged. I replaced the EGR Valve. I purchased the DPFE sensor and it is not on my truck. I have the 2 studs where it mounts near the EGR Valve but it is not there. I followed the EGR hoses and found a sensor with 2 vaccuum lines above the steering and near the firewall near the Master Cylinder on the drivers side. I must have a different style DPFE sensor. Anyone have this or know where to locate a new one? CEL is still on. Please Help!
I also have a 2001 F150 4.6. As I recall, my DPFE did not fasten to the EGR valve, but was floating as you describe yours. I have had mine since new, and I believe it has always been that way. The DPFE sensor I got from my Ford dealer was an exact duplicate. I think that whatever guide you have that shows it "mounts near the EGR Valve", must be wrong.
PS: The SES light may not go off right away after you've fixed the problem. Unless manually cleared, it will stay on for some time.
One other thing, my problem turned out to be a crack in one of the vacuum hoses and probably not the DPFE at all. So I would suggest that you carefully examine yours for any breaks because mine was not at all obvious.
I noticed one hose was worn and heated to the point that the surface was flaking off. I am replacing that soon. I thought it was strange that I purchased the sensor and it was the same as in the book and it is not on my truck but a different one floating like you said. Thanks for the info.
There were 2 different type DPFE sensors used in '01. One was the older Aluminum case type, and the other was the much smaller plastic type. Sounds to me like you've got the plastic type on your truck, and ended up with the Aluminum case type for a replacement.

Thanks Johnny for the response. Actually, I purchased the Plastic sensor from Autozone and it looked like the one in the Haynes Book. I found the mounting location for it but it wasn't there. I then followed the hoses from the EGR valve and found the sensor located in a weird spot near the master cylinder. I guess I will have to go to the Ford Dealer an let them see if they can find the part to replace it. I can't figure it out.

Actually those are two variations of a single type.
The other type is a stalk-mount, it sits directly on top of two hard metal lines instead of using rubber hoses to make the connections to the sample tubes.
You have to purchase the correct type based on ythe year and model of the engine.

That other type you're referring to must be a low production or special emmisions package piece-of all of the modulars I've worked on-I've never seen anything other than the two I listed.
