Problems Gassing Up
Problems Gassing Up
I have a 2006 F350 V10 with 15,000 miles. I bought it new and have had a problem filling the tank with gas. It takes a lot of fiddling with the nozzle to keep it from shutting off. Most gas stations I end up holding the nozzle and very very slowly adding the gas.
Anybody have any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum Gary
Has the problem been there from new?
If not, do you drive on dusty roads often?
The EVAP canister, located above the spare tire, may be plugged up with dust. Ford has a Technical Service Bulletin about the problem. The cure is to replace the canister and add a different breather hose so it doesn't get as much dust in it.

I think I have had the problem since day one but I am not really sure. I do drive on drive on dusty roads all the time. Do you think I should take it to the dealer? This problem is a real pain when I gas up.
Next time I get gas I will try turning the nozzle sideways as machanic suggested and see if that helps.

I had something that needed to be fueled the same way, with nozzle handle at the 4 or 5 o'clock position. Then I discovered that it was a problem only on certain pumps (or nozzles). Seems some nozzles are more sensitive to "backsplash" and click themselves off too easily. I've also noticed some stations have much more pressure/volume than others, especially if you're the only one filling at the time. Some filler necks don't put up with a fast delivery in any form.
Don't feel too bad, in NY we are deemed so stupid that there are no "clickers" to hold the handle open to allow you to clean the windshield or whatever. We have to hold it open through the entire fill...or stuff a "just-right-sized" pop bottle in there.
Just a thought...I noticed the fill tube on this new van is no more than a hose connected between the filler neck and the tank and it's not the radiator hose sized tube like in the past. I'd trace it to ensure it hasn't become collapsed or pinched by mud/debris/stray rock, whatever. Anything is possible and with the reduced diameter, there's no room for error.
Move to Oregon, we don't pump our own gas
Seriously though, I'd ask the dealer service dept to take a look.

My truck recently started doing this at my favorite station... went to a different station and same thing..
Dropped the spare and disconnected the air inlet box with the filter above the large vapor canister cylinder... the inlet is very large and the box is stuffed with open cell foam per filter... it was not clogged at all
Looked for Kinks in the vent tube to the filler neck (TSB item also) and none
tried different pump and now it flows fast like before
Now have this issue every two or three fill-ups and it is starting to aggravate me as I do not believe all the different pump nozzles I try are that sensitive and that it still is something to do with venting.. just not in any mood to drop the fuel tank...still under warranty but my service writer will do all the TSB checks I have already determined are NOT the cause... I can probably con one of them to go with me for a fill up and I am just as sure that when I do, it will fill normal... I hate these kind of problems!
There is a large electrically activated solenoid air valve back on the vapor canister but each time I check it the thing is open. I can not tell what conditions would close it.....arrg!! I hate Fords proprietary secretive way of hiding important "how it works" information!

Thanks for all the information. It does sound like I do have an abnormal situation.
This summer I was all over the west coast and had problems at all the stations. As Ace noted, in Oregon they pump the gas for you and they had the same problem, so it is just not me.
I think I am going to be forced to take it to the dealer in the next few weeks. I will post back with what I found out, if anything.

I have the same issue with mine...but only at certain gas stations. Most are a-ok, but there are a couple Phillips 66 stations that give me fits. I been using both Mobil and Shell in the St. Louis area, and have had zero problems. Just lucky, I guess.
I own a gas station and I see this in all sorts of cars and trucks..many times if you've got an aftermarket utility body or flat bed the blame falls on the installer who might have deviated the fill tube....i see them go "uphill" on a regular basis other times the hose is too long and dips below where the hose enters the tank. Other times the problem stems from the vent tube being kinked or blocked. But lately i've been seeing a bunch of Fords (and mazdas) having problems because of the valve in the tank where the fuel tube enters the tank, I believe this valve is to prevent gas from coming back up the tube and pouring out in the event that the car gets upsidedown. when the valve sticks, it's like it only opens once it has a full fuel tube to push the valve open. I've had several customers have their cars repaired on their own, but I've had a bunch get this repaired at the dealership free of charge due to TSB's (or secret warranties on this). Don't forget this is part of the emissions system and gets the same warranty as a catalytic converter would, which is 80K, I think.

Thanks for that good information. I have the stock bed but the valve in the tank sticking was very interesting and could be my problem.
When I start filling the tank it acts as if the tank was already full. The gas starts to blow back immediately and the nozzle shuts off. Then after multiple starts I can finally get a continuous flow at a trickle. At one station in Idaho it must of taken me 20 minutes to fill up.

Update on the Gassing up Problem –
Took it to the dealer and they had a service bulletin on this issue. The dealer is ordering the new parts needed so in a few days I hope I shall be back in business.
