I am attempting to change out the thermostat in my '99 B2500 with the 2.5L 4 cylinder. I have tried to everything by the book (haynes) but I can only seem to get access to one bolt (the upper right one when standing in front of the engine). I removed the drive belt, and all of the other tricks that I've heard would help access. I'm stuck.
Has anyone ever had this problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
You might need a U-joint to get to it, my 4.0L required it on one bolt and it made another quite a bit easier. Have you tried that? Or is it flat blocked in? And if so, by what?
I ran my finger on the back side of the housing and couldn't feel anything. It seems logical if one of the mounting bolts were right behind the two smaller hoses coming from the heater core to the thermostat. But nowhere in any instructions does it mention this. I've just read to remove the air duct and drive belt, which to me seem nowhere close to where I need access.
Are the mounting bolts level with one another? That might narrow down where I need to look.
There's the first problem, an infamously crappy service manual with a name that is best associated with underwear and one that is best known for lack of detail. But at any rate, you're going to have to either feel for the fasteners with your fingers or use a mirror and a light to locate them. Once you find them, you may have to be creative in removing them by using things like short box wrenches or a swivel (or two). Careful when installing and don't over-torque these small screws.
