1984 460 severe backfiring/driveability issues! HELP!
1984 F250 w/ 460 c6 auto. I've been having stalling problems lately, truck just quits and wont start for a while. Suspected ignition module. Buddy of mine had one laying around and said it only had about 3 hours of life used up. I put it in and same problem, except now I'm getting backfiring, havent tried the original one yet though. Any ideas? Could there be a problem elsewhere? Or does it seem all ignition module related?
I'd check for a vacuum leak and see if your timing is still on the money. You could have jumped a tooth on your timing chain. Did the truck give you any little problems before it started acting up or did it start acting up all of a sudden?

The problem has been intermitent. Most of the time, the truck runs strong, but then she'll just cut out. as i said before, I got a "new" module, hooked it up, and it was running badly. This morning I was warming up the truck w/ the new module and it died randomly...I waited a few mins, fired right back up. I drove it to my work and it was backfiring and surging again. I got to work and plugged in the original box and it ran fine, no backfiring or surging.
I would guess that it's probably the pickup coil inside the distributor. I have an 86 F-250 with a 460 and it did almost the exact same thing except for the backfiring. I changed the module and it died on me again on the way home. I checked around and it turned out to be the pickup assembly inside the distributor. It's that little star wheel under the rotor.
Anyway, a new pickup assembly was $25 or so but I just got a new distributor for $60 and it hasn't given up the ghost yet in 9 months and the truck runs great. As far as the backfiring goes, my only guess is the "new" ignition box. If your truck has a Duraspark II ignition, it'll have a blue grommet on the box where the wires go into it. Maybe if the "new" ignition box is a Duraspark III with a different color grommet, it's not compatible and it could be causing some issues with the ignition. That's just a guess, so don't quote me on that.

You should be able to take the distributor to a parts store and have it tested on one of their machines. Other than that, I have no idea how else to test it.
