The noises my super duty makes...

Ok I have a couple noises I'd like some input on. I have an 02 F350 7.3 auto super cab lwb single wheel 4x4 with 75000 on it. Truck has a 2.5" leveling kit in front, air bags in rear, slightly oversize tires, otherwise is stock. The truck gets used pretty hard, plowing snow in winter, and otherwise towing approx. 6-10k lbs at least 3 or 4 times a week. When I take off from a stop when loaded, I get a very noticable shudder/clunk coming from the rear of the truck. It is a lot worse if I happen to be turning while starting out, and it seems to match the speed of the wheel in frequency, and not the driveshaft. I had shimmed the carrier bearing down per the TSB, didn't help. But this does not feel like a drive shaft vibration. Its almost feels like a welded rear binding up, had it in the shop a while back for a look see and all is well in the rear end. anyone else ever have this happen....... or have a suggestion??

Noise #2.... Starting to develop the standard early 90's Patented Ford power steering pump whine. Which I assume is additoinal wear and tear on the unit from the tires and 1000 lb plow. It whines and groans when I turn the wheel at low speed. Works fine just makes noise. What I don't get is why does that same whine get louder if I press really hard on the brake pedal while sitting still????? Any help is appreciated

The power steering pump is used to build the pressure for the power brakes, that is why it gets louder when you are using the brakes. As far as what is causing the noises, I can't help you there, sorry.

That makes sense about the ps pump and the brakes working together. Didn't think of that. The clunk isn't the one you get when you have the hubs locked in and you turn, this is definetly from the rear of the truck and might be considered more of a shudder. Anyone else?

my 03 just started doing the same thing. a buddy of mine seems to think its from getting the rear end hot when it was stuck a few weeks ago. he said to change the rear end fluid, b/c the clutches probally got hot. don't know if it will work have not had time to do it.

I had a problem like this but only when I started up from a light or something. I did two things, I pulled apart the driveshaft and lubricated the spline with the Ford approve lube and changed shocks. Clunk gone.

Good luck

I had the same noise problem with my '03 F250 brakes. I had a cracked hose coming out of the power steering pump resv. which allowed fluid to slowly leak. The lower the fluid level the louder the noise when braking or turning. The noise has gone away after replacing the hose and refilling the pump reservoir.

Thats exactly wat it is. Had a buddys SD start doing it after pulling out some massive tree stumps. The clutches get hot and wna stick. Didnt no that changing the fluid would cure it though Ill have to mention that to him.

If you change the fluid in the diff, be sure to add friction modifier, or you will still have the shudder. This shudder is from the clutches in the rear end, usually shows after heavy use, (heat breaks down the oil), or when the fluid gets low.

Unhappy Lack of towing power

I currently own a new 07 SD 6.0 powerstroke-- had a 03 6.0 , my new truck runs fine around town and open road- but will not pull the grades w/ a even light load, 5-6K-- feels like the turbo isn't kicking in or trans is not shifting down--verysad when my friend blew past me pulling the same trailer in an 03 Dodge--took truck to dealer and they tell me no codes, and every thing tests fine.Is anyone else having the same issue? My 03 wouldn't have noticed I was climbing a grade. Max speed with 07 was 60MPH on the floor!!! Help!

What RPM were you at? Did you try manually putting it in a lower gear to get the RPM's up so the turbo would kick in? If it works if you manually put it into a lower gear then that means whatever senses the load and causes the turbo to kick in isnt working code or no code.

Sounds like the turbo isn't working. Need to jack up the dealer about this or go to another dealer
