OK, so far everthing you guys have provided me with has been very helpfull. Thank you. Now I need good advice, the rear end of my 42 has to be replaced before I can proceed. The old one is locked solid. I have several avaliable to me including a nine inch with disc brakes from a lincoln, and a Ranger 8.8. What axle if any is bolt in? And if none are were can I buy new perches?. Last thing do I set the pinion up to be level with the ground or should it be a some angle. Guess that wasn't the last thing hints on how to measure and from were would be VERY helpfull. This axle swap is planed for this weekend if I get the neccessary info and have or can get the right axle in time.
I'm not sure how similar the 42 is to my 48, but some of the swap is the same. You'll need to crawl under with a tape measure.
The pinion angle needs to be equal (and opposite) to the angle of the tranny output shaft. Do yourself a favor and buy a magnetic angle indicator (under 20 bucks). You can check both on the face of the u-joint yoke. If you need to adjust the angle, NAPA carries caster wedges in 2" widths (example 5 deg - p.n. is 704-1168)
I ground my spring perches off and rewelded them in the right place. Measurement needs to be to the center hole for the spring locator pin.
JC Whitney has them in their last catalog under Jeep supplies. If your springs are 2" their part number is: 47ZJ5638X $18.95/pr
Might need to open up to fit a 3"axle tho...
Only other measurement that is critical, regardless of source, is wheel hub to wheel hub. Keeps the wheels from rubbing inside or outside of the fenders.
You'll need U-bolts (NAPA) and plates to fasten to your springs. Used or new are available.
The rest is matter of personal choice - disk vs drum; 9" vs. 8.8; and gear ratio, etc.
Have fun and good luck. - tim
Hi, I have a turbo tbird rear in my 40 it is an 8.8 with disc brakes I have the original springs and perches on it and just welded it to the frame. center of the wheel opening.
Hey John - where ya been? Haven't seen any postings from you for months. How's your '40 coming along?
We now have a complete rolling chassis. Waiting to get the motor parts back from the machine shop now. Steve's getting pretty upset. Been waiting for a little over 4 months now. Keep getting the run-a-round, but there aren't that many good machine shops that we know of. We're hoping ???? to have it on the road by next Thanksgiving.
Guess I need to try and use the galley in here so I can show our progress.
Carlene, been running the car shows with the mustang and running back and forth to the hospital with my wife she finally got the surgery she needed on her back. They did a fusion and she spent some time in the hospital then in a rehibilitation hospital, but is home now and doing well. after the brace comes off (about 5 more weeks) then she goes for more therapy and hopefully the nerve in the leg will come back then she'll be good as new!!! Also as tall as she was before, after the surgery she is an inch taller!!!
