Aquired a 42 1/2 ton from my step-dad. He has had it since his dad bought it used in the forties. It now has a Studebaker drivetrain but will be replaced with 350/700r4 I already have. I have been offered a Ford 9 inch with disc brakes from a Lincoln. Does anyone know if its practical(width), Also want front disc, but don't want expense and headache of mustang II conversion. Hoping to put disc brakes on original spindles. One last thing, any suggestions on radiator. Need something that will fit and has provisions for AT cooling. may just have to use auxillary cooler.
If you are looking for a 9 inch rear go with something out of a late 60's-early 70's Mustang (maybe Cougar too)with a V-8. They are about the same width as the stock rear and will pretty much bolt in by welding on new spring pads on the rear end. I think Magnum Axle carries a kit to install disc brakes on the original I-beam, a couple of other places have them too. Most of the kits are complete bolt in that can be finished in a few hours with no modifications. I have seen radiators for these trucks with provisions for Chevy 350 w/ auto tranny. Check Obsolete Ford Parts in Oklahoma, I saw they had some a few years ago in a "New Parts" flyer, think they were about $550 I think. Hope this helps a little.
Didn't think Ford made a '42 half ton. I was under the impression that they only made large trucks due to the war. What's the hood, grille and hood trim look like? Does it have the tear-drop headlight rings? Would be interested in seeing a picture.
Anyway, we used a 9" rear from an older small Bronco in our '41 and it worked great.
Ford did make '42 1/2 tons. In fact, some of them had 4 cylinders, the same motor as the tractors, I believe. A '42 has the same front sheetmetal as 45-47. '42-47 trucks had a round headlight ring that was stamped out of sheetmetal. '42 was a short production run, due the the war.
I found that the 8.8" rear end out of 96 Mustang was the right width (52.5"?) and came with disc brakes and a 5 bolt whell pattern. Just got some spring pads from Speedway in Lincoln NE and trimmed some brackets. Fits and works wonderful.
