Is there an oil that can be run year round here in Va. The spec sheet does not recommend 15-40 below 30* (winter lows here often into teens) and summer highs sometimes around 100 which eliminates 10-30, I would guess that if so it would be a syn. But which one? Is there a reasonably priced one?

Thanks! My local Ford dealer told me AFTER I changed oil w/ Rotella dino that there was a TSB warning against the use of Rotella due to foaming, which would cause erratic running. Is that not a problem with the Rotella syn?

Yes, lowering the oil level cured both of these problems. The foaming of the oil (caused by being overfull) is what was causing the drivability issues. Not the actual oil involved. If you filled with the recommended 15 qts, and say 1-2 qts was left in the hpop, you were now 1-2 qts overfull.

Thank you both!! It feels good to have my newbie questions answered so quickly. Since Ford doesn't list a 5w-40 oil on their lubricant page in owners manual, will there be any warranty issues?

No, no warranty issues from running the 5W40 as long as it is CI-4+ rated, which Rotella T syn is.

The diesel supplement lists 15w40 preffered from 30 up and acceptable down to 10 and recommended for towning. 10w30 preffered from 30 down to -10 and accedptable up to 90. 5w30 or 5w40 acceptable from 30 on down and 0w30 from 0 down.

Yes, as Keith points out, the Ford diesel supplement only allows for 5w-40 below 30*, not for use at higher temps?

I don't see that they could have a warranty issue with using 5w40 year round. When I took mine in to ford for oil change I asked for 5w40 as the temps have been dropping below 0. They told me they never heard of 5w40 and only use 15w40 all year in the diesel. Right now it's 4 degrees with a high of 14 which is well below the listed minimum temp for 15w40.

so i guess the ford stealers just want you to use motocraft syn.

what say you!
i just did a oil change with rotella T15-40 and materials cost me $80.23 so i think u made out well...

A local diesel performance shop in my area, with a very good reputation, said to use 15-40 year round until about 10,000 miles and then consider changing to synthetic.

My dealer charges $59 for oil change and tire rotation; some sort of mark-down for trucks bought there. It has always seemed like a GREAT deal to me. Too bad your dealers do not want you back near the showroom more often.

This begs another PSD newbie question: In my Ducati motorcycles I wait until the engine has about 6K miles before I switch to syn oil. Is there a recommended mileage before you switch syn oil in a PSD? My 2007 6.0 has 2200 miles on it right now.

I was up to walmart earlier and looked to see what they had for motorcraft oil. They had the 1-quart bottles of motorcraft 15w40 diesel oil and on the back it says for temps below 20 use 10w30.
