OK I'm going to try this here since I couldn't get any input in the transmission forum. The other day when I put my F450 into Drive; the gear indicator didn't follow the gear selector. Later it did work but it is happening every once in a while. Is this common or is it an indication that it is about to break?
There is a small cable and spring assembly that sometimes sticks, especially when it is cold (read gummed up). You can usually fix it by locating it behind the dash below the speedometer and spraying it with a light lubricant like WD-40. Hope this helps.
Thanks truckeemountain, I thought the cold might have something to do with it. It's been cold down here in Reno too. I was hoping it was something I could fix since the warranty ran out last month.
Also chk the dtr switch mounted on the side of the tranny .sometimes they start to loosen up.the next thing that might pop up is a no start condition in park because the dtr switch becomes misaligned.
Hey Guys. Just gonna chime in here I have a 78 F-150 460 with a C6 trans. I been tryin to firgure out what is wrong with the Ignition switch. I turn her to the start position but no dice, So I bought a new Ign. Switch and still no dice... Could that Gear indacator switch be the problem. Anyone know if the steering colunm might have anything to do with it. The gear selector broke off. Using a set of vice grip pliers for the mean time. But the starting problem pre dates the the broken gear selector...Any help would be great. Thanks. -Rev
Sometimes the gear selector will get mis-aligned and not let a vehicle start. I believe it is called the nuetral safety switch, is what tells your vehicle is safe to start. You can usually take the truck out of park and put it in nuetral to start if the gear selector is out of alignment, if the switch is bad it won't work in any position.
I think that ignition switch has a little bit of adjustment and if it isn't working you loosen the mounting bolts and slied it up the column toward the sreering wheel. That allows that shaft to engage the switch a little more. At least that is what I had to do with one of my older Fords.
Thanks guys. So The neutral safety switch. My Ign switch is mounted just below the Instrament Panel, on the dash. Not the column. WOuld the neutral safety switch be found on the Trans or column. Thanks again for your input.-Rev
